Well, I decided to try several different oils over the summer. When my next OC is due, i will be running German Castrol. After that, I will try royal purple, and then from there redline. I am currently running amsoil and obviously with all my years experience with it, I know how it performs / holds up. Hopefully something will make the slightly rough idle I have go away.

Coincidentally, Quaker State Q torque has made my girlfriends taurus idle smooth as silk compared to the motorcraft that was in there previously...

Your very thorough in your oil testings. Some of your oil/brands I can't get in my area so I don't bother. I never ried german Castrol. Royal Purple is the most exotic that I can find at my local Pep Boys. Maybe one day I'll try it. Still thinking about Quaker State synthetic. Take care as I'm sure your results will be satisfying.

the Quaker State synthetic (Q or Q power as its called) is what I am running, and I really like it (in the taurus). It has made such a noticeable difference that even my girlfriend said something...

You got me really thinking about trying that oil!!!!
Currently I'm using Mobil 1 high mileage and so far have noticed nothing compared to the standard M1. Don't get me wrong M1 had been good too me since 89'. Still I'm itching fopr a change just once to see.

Exactly. My 4.7 has this substance appearing on the fill cap underside, but the engine does not sludge. I've used M1 and 9 to 11 K mile OCI without problem or pause.

HI Everyone, another oil noob here, I have an 04 Ram 1500 with a 4.7, so far my experiences have been that
during the winter the condensation on the fill cap can be pretty nasty, at first sight I would believe that I was in trouble (this truck is my daily driver). I have seen since I bought it new, that it does this every cold season, I took up using valvoline maxlife, with a k&n filter and regular changes at 3k. Once a year when it is warm out I will run a bottle of napa cheapo engine flush (seems like it is just kerosene bottled nicely) for about 20 min ,drain it, put in fresh oil and later do a change 1k after, that seems to keep things clean. In the fill tube on my truck there is an insert that collects this stuff, when I do a change I make sure it and the fill tube are as clean as I can get them.... so far so good. The 4.7 isnt the peppiest for a 1/2 ton truck, but it suits my purposes real well. It's nice to know that there are people out there modding them - I probably will once I finish paying for it ;-)....pardon me I have a bunch more reading to do...

As far as the maxlife goes, I have used it in several vehicles with great results. If you get it at wal-mart in the 5qt jug, it really is a great deal...

Just remember that it made a difference compared to motorcraft. Your result compared to M1 might me different....

I'll take note of your responce. I know I'll be comparing the difference between M1 and "Q". My guess is that I might not see any difference as you and others have said it's good synthetic oil.

If you also check out Dakota Durango.com site you should be able to find many people that have had sludge issues. It's well documented from previous owners that have not taken proper care of their precious Durango, Dakotas and such.

Flushing of the engine annually is what I recommend to keep your 4.7 squeeky clean.

Hey gang,

I just bought an '05 Dakota QC with the 4.7, and as usual, I'm finding out the bad news AFTER the purchase! Its only got 16K on it, so hopefully its not got enough miles on it for a sludge problem, if indeed it is a design flaw. I was an automotive machinist for 18 years(ran a crank grinder) and participated in the shop's late model racing program, and I stay in touch with the guys at the machine shop. They say they have heard of the 4.7L sludge issues but have NOT seen an unusual number of them come in for rebuild compared to other manufacturer's engines, and not always for an oil problem. The most-often heard complaint they get is actually that the 4.7 can be a fuel-thirsty critter! I know that this will generate a lot of hate amongst you previous posters, but they think the 4.7 is just more prone to failure due to NEGLECT than design. I have read this entire thread and seen the reports of pampered engines that failed anyway, and I'm not saying you didn't take care of them. There are exceptions to every rule, as they say.

For those that deny there is a sludge issue with the 4.7, it could be said that it is less forgiving on neglect. After reading many posts on early 4.7 models, Chrysler fixed a few issues in the 2002 time frame that may worsen the situation (PCV system issues).
