I hear you miller. I would be very disappointed with this too, but I just don't think actual carbon build-up is, or was a contributing issue here.
I've just never heard of that as being an inherent problem with these engines. They don't use EGR and their PCV systems are ported directly into the intake manifold (no hoses or exposed PCV valve) and work well. I've never heard of oil carry-over on them.
If this is indeed a common Ecotec problem, it doesn't get more horrible than this. There's no warning signs or way to know a cylinder is running just lean enough to over time cook the exhaust valve to the point it won't seal.
