Cheap used cars I should buy now?

Eh, it would be on top of the peely stuff, that's the dash and stuff.

The door panels literally fall apart. Here's a good thread:

Pretty sad. I wonder who makes these parts? Interior trim parts are typically made by someone like Faurecia, or Magna Interiors, or Continental?

Honestly if that's its biggest problem, I would find a fix for it.

I’m on the lookout for a 2014-15 Mazda5 with a manual, or another Scion xB of the same vintage with low miles. In spite of the oil burning issues I still enjoy the xB about as much as any cheap car I’ve ever owned. I also would be interested in a low miles late model wagon of some sort.

Can't go wrong with an Aztec. :) I know a few folks that have Nissan pickups that are well into the 300K+ mileage range now and still chugging along. I think they are relatively reasonable when they have the high mileage. Boxster, Audi TT...if you are handy with the wrenches.
I had an Aztec for about 5 years and it was reliable and cheap to maintain. Seems nobody else liked them, though.

I haven’t even seen one on the road for a few years now.

They had a brief moment if infamy as the car Walter White drove in Breaking Bad. I think weirdos snatched them up.

FJ cruisers are valuable?!? I’d get an actual FJZ80 or earlier. But not the cruiser or anything later. They’re not the same IMO.
They always had a bit of a following. When the pandemic started the "overland" craze went full whacko. People were paying crazy money for anything off road oriented, loading them up with accessories that they never would use, and drove around like they were on full safari. The FJ fit right into that. Xterra's too. The last Xterra was built in 2015. People were paying more for a low mile one in 2020 than they were new.

Its starting to wind down.

12 years ago my dad bought a CPO 2007 FJ Cruiser with 60k miles for like $22k. If we had parked it in a garage for the past 12 years it would still probably be worth about that.

There’s a 2007 on FB Marketplace with 192k miles for $17,200.
There’s another with 356k miles for $12k.

Could I assume the same applies to any platform that has the N52 - like a E90 or X3 for example?
Yes

The E90 is a great car as well, but more common. I chose the 5-series because they are slightly less common and a little roomier. They also had the ZF6 transmission instead of the French GM transmission in a lot of 3-series (if automatic).

I typically avoid awd BMWs because it ruins the steering feel, adds complexity, and I just don’t need it.

986/987 Boxster or, preferably, Boxster S. Bought well, they remain the best buy in the sports car world bang for the $ wise. Grin machines. Granted Porsche parts are what you would expect, and for them most part you want to keep with OE/OEM, but the good news is that that well-kept examples don't break that often and when they do and are properly addressed, they stay fixed. Yes they have some well-known warts, but all cars do, and theirs are mostly easily dealt with.

Oh, and unless you are a True Believer, avoid the Discos.

I love my 2008 Xterra. The market didn't love them, they only made 300,000 over 10 years. There awesome - family car, off roader, grocery getter. They do it all and run forever. Gave mine to my daughter so I am on the hunt for another one.

Got me thinking of the great cars that I should buy now, because there pretty cheap compared to new and they likely won't make another like it? So I am not talking about a 2004 Accord. Something thats more unique but still common. This is my current list. I can think of lots of others, but will start here.

1) Infiniti G37. Basically a 12th generation skyline - if I can find one that isn't black and isn't beaten to death.
2) Land Rover Disco 2. I know their junk, but they look cool?
3) Second Generation new Beatle.

Thoughts on mine? Ones I am missing. Ones you own already and love?
Isuzu Vehicross, something like 2275 ever made weird looking now quickly appreciating. Suzuki X90. Could be had with 4wd and a manual. Super weird proportions hardly any made I've only ever seen one or two in the wild. Nissan Leopard which was sold here as the Infiniti J30. Acura legend/vigor (haven't seen one in a decade). Mitsubishi Pajero or delica.
