Seeing Sonax and Wolfgang Ceramic Coating being sold at Autogeek and Autopia. Just curious if anyone has used such a product and your experience with it. Here is how Sonax describes the product: SONAX CC36 Ceramic Coating is not a wax or paint sealant. In fact, it’s much different. This two-stage coating blankets your vehicle’s paintwork in a flexible shell of extremely glossy protection that lasts years, not months. Compared to a conventional wax or paint sealant, SONAX CC36 Ceramic Coating provides superior gloss and better resistance to environmental impacts such as bird droppings, water spots, car wash scratches, and more. SONAX CC36 Ceramic Coating is for the person that wants the best protection for their vehicle!

I have my doubts about these products, and the claims made about them.

I think a good sealant applied twice a year would be a better choice.

I was a sealant lover before but I gave up with my 6 monthly reapplying the sealant. The replacement is opticoat, it has lasted years and what I need to do is bring to carwash and have liquid wax or quick detailer to add extra gloss. It is proven lasting longer, the important point is the professionalism of the preparation before coating, use extra fine polish to make big gloss difference.

I used another Autogeek (Palm Beach Motor Accessories) ceramic coating; McKee's Paint Coating recently on my Mazda. You can find the thread here.

While I can't fully vouch for longevity because I haven't had it on long enough, here are my thoughts about ceramic coatings in general. You can't expect it to last for 2 years or however long they advertise. Maybe on a weekend garage queen, but not for a daily driver.

I believe that by comparing sealants to coating we are putting the cart before the horse. Ceramic coatings have been proven to last a long time (maybe not as long as claimed, but still), they are extremely hard and resistant to micro-scratching and they offer greatly improved protection to environmental contamination and damage.

So all that to say, I didn't decide to use a coating because it will last until doomsday. I'm expecting to recoat every 6-9 months (I will assess at that time). However, I did use it because of the protection that it provides over traditional waxes and sealants. I will seal the coating I have on the car right now for extra protection, but it doesn't necessarily need it.

You simply can't use the "it doesn't last any longer than a good sealant" argument against coatings because they carry too many additional benefits.

I used Black Diamond Sealant which I liked. After some time in the elements honestly I see no real difference between it, Menzerna, Collinite 845, or Rejex for that matter to justify the higher price. I spent the time doing the necessary prep work prior to the application. Stepping up to one of these higher priced, high end Ceramic products will be tough sell "for me". A free sample, to try it, sure! But I don't see that happening anytime soon.

I'm stating my opinion, nothing more.

CQuartz UK and Optimum Glosscoat (first version) have both held up for 2+ years under my use. The newest version of Glosscoat should last even longer.

I have installed other brands of coatings, but have not personally monitored their durability.

PBMG was recently bought out by some folks who have an association with the Sonax USA brand, so you will probably start to see more of their products sold at autogeek.

I thought you removed the coating shortly after application?

I have a few cars that are coated that I see regularly.

On my car, 1/2 of the car is currently coated with CQuartz and the other 1/2 has something else.

That's the one. Sorry for the confusion, my memory twisted the name around a bit.
