Sick of USAA raising their rates for no reason. No accidents, tickets, etc. etc. but they claim that had to raise Oklahoma rates to stay "competitive." I have called them twice to try and understand why my rates went up even though the value of my cars depreciated another year, but no real clear answer. Been with USAA since 1994 and now shopping around. Best rate is by far, Progressive. Better comp/collision amounts and even included rental car and on road assistance. You know what they say, if it's too good to be true, then it usually is. I know that USAA and Progressive have some sort of partnership, but that's about it. I've called a couple of local repair shops and they all had good things to say about Progressive. So, what do you all think? Good, Bad or Indifferent? Wonder if I could go back to USAA if I did drop them later on? I'm not dropping my account, as I have money with them and exclusively use their MasterCard. I'm not talking about 10 to 20 dollar a month increase, but a couple of hundred dollars. Credit rating is excellent, no accidents, tickets, own and still in the same house for over ten years.

I had Progressive for about 5 years, was really happy with them until they tried to jack my rates 15% for no apparent reason (no claims, tickets, credit report still OK)-went to AIG (now 21st Century), still getting a good deal. IMHO, many insurance companies took a bath in the market-trying to make it back on the backs of their customers-shopping around=$$$

Raising rates to "stay competitive". That sounds like State Farm's attitude to hurricane insurance here in Florida. They were overexposed and raised rates to run off policy holders to reduce their exposure.

State Farm dropped my homeowners insurance, so I dropped State Farm's auto insurance after being with them for 39 years. I went to an independent insurance agent and he got me better coverage at a cheaper rate than State Farm on both auto and homeowners.

I have Progressive insurance on my boat. No problems, but no claims either.

After Hurricane Ivan USAA was notorious for refusing to pay claims until sued by the policy holder. A friend of mine who is a Federal prosecutor had to sue them to finally get paid a year and half after the hurricane.

Show USAA how to be "competitive". Dump them.

I think this must be the norm with all of them. It seems that you have to switch every couple years to get a better rate. Then a few years later the prices go up and your old company come whining with a better rate...

Is there any law/policy that wouldn't let you go back to a previous carrier should you decide to do so? Honestly, I feel a lot of loyalty towards USAA because I've been with them for so long. However, my cash has no loyalty!!!!!
I went and did the www.insweb.com and now got a binch of other companies calling me. Some I've never even heard of. Anybody got anything on Liberty Mutual Insurance?

I may have the wrong company in mind, but I seem to recall Consumer Reports giving Liberty Mutual their highest rating in an auto insurance comparison a few years ago.

They are mainly a life insurance company based in the South, Birmingham, Alabama, IIRC. They specialize in small life insurance policies sold in rural areas, commonly referred to as "burial policies", because they are bought to insure a family has enough money to bury the policy holder. Typical policies are $5,000-$10,000 and premiums are sometimes paid weekly in small amounts. They used to have agents go around to the small farms and shacks collecting policy premiums every week. Folks would keep a tally card hanging just inside the door and the salesman would mark it each time a premium was paid.

That is how I remember them growing up in the South in the 1950's and 1960's. They have probably branched out into other insurance products by now.

I had Progressive for a couple years. Everytime I renewed my policy at 6 months the rates would go up by 15% every single time. They had no reason why the rates went up. By the time I cancelled it I was paying twice what I started out paying and that was with 0 accidents and 0 claims.

Geico has been excellent for the past 2 years. The only change was a 5% increase after my accident.

BG, did you try to get a quote from Mercury online ? I do online comparing 4-5 insurance companies every few years, Mercury premium is the lowest of them all.

I don't know what to tell you. I just learned that I've earned accident forgiveness for free from USAA, which is a good thing since I just added a teen male to my policy.

I dropped the Camry to liability only, put him on that car and the increase was only $50/mo.

My wife still drives that car as well, so I don't make him pay his entire premium. Yet!

Anyway, check to make sure you are not giving up something and that it's still cheaper after you figure the Subscribers Savings Account.

After 22 years with USAA I have several thousand dollars in my SSA, not to mention the annual distribution.

We have progressive for home, auto, jet ski. Home is through homesite (not directly progressive). I'm not impressed with homesite, but progressive has been ok.

FYI - play around with the quote on boat insurance. For the jet ski, I figured out $100/yr was their minimum. So I started raising the liability coverage in the quote until it started raising the premium.

I had Progressive in the past, and it was a huge pain in the backside. They were much more bother than they were worth.

After about the third policy on my motorcycle in about six months (they never could get it right, and insisted re-writing a new policy each time), I told them not to bother and cancelled.

There's better options out there.

Progressive is extremely reasonable on my cars but charges a car's premium on my motorcycle (old Virago cruiser) that only sees sunlight half the year. IDK what this means for boats...

Been getting quotes out the wah-zoo. Really confused now. Allstate came in pretty good even with 50/100/100, which was way more coverage than the 25/50/25 I'd been quoted from Progressive and even USAA. Notice my sig. block. USAA wants 882 bucks for 6 months, state minimum and full coverage on all. Progressive was at 625 if paid in full. Allstate was at 725 locked in for one year and nothing extra for monthly payments as long as it's direct from my bank. Geesh, I'm so confused. Also, since winter is coming, the boat/seadoo is parked inside, covered and secured. You think I need to insure them anyway?

Do you have to have insurance on the boats for registration purposes or is it comprehensive b/c you have a loan?

Peace of mind. Both paid off and not required for registration (yet) in Oklahoma. I guess the only thing I'd worry about would be either fire or tornado. The dry storage garage that the boat/seadoo are in is metal. Metal roof, metal sides and metal doors. Flooring is concrete. Yeah, a fire could still start, but better off than being in a wood shed. Tornado season is slowly coming to an end.....I think you just helped me talk myself out of getting insurance for right now....
