I did see the other thread titled "Insurance Shopping", but it's a bit old, and things may have changed by now, so I decided to start a new one. I have two autos and my home owner's through USAA, and my motorcycles through Progressive. I have noticed my USAA premiums have been increasing almost every time my policy is renewed, up about 35% now compared to 3 years ago. I decided to let an independent agent search this time as I have tried the nightmare of searching companies myself. I contacted two agents, but I've only gotten the numbers back from one guy so far. He came back with a savings of $125 a month (because I like to make monthly payments), which an annual savings of $1500 by switching my autos to Progressive, and my home owner's to Auto Owners. This is the first time I've had USAA's rates bested by ANY company in the entire 25 years I've been with them. I've always had good service, but that's a big difference in premiums. I haven't switched yet, but I'm definitely leaning that way...I will wait to see what the other agent comes up with and then I'll decide...

I recently left USAA after +20 years and went to Plymouth Rock. Better rates and there are some serious signs that USAA is having internal issues with staffing and management. They aren't what they used to be IMO....cue USAA fanbois!

I have Geico for my two vehicles, Allstate for my home. I am planning on doing an insurance review soon.

I believe I would get great rates if NJM handled DE. Amica is a company that is a mutual company, owned by it's members.

Geico provides a "mechanical breakdown" option that supplements a cars warranty. Few companies provide that.

Geico also provided a 5 year good driver discount.

It's sometimes hard to compare apples to apples. Some initial prices are policies with low limits.

AARP has deals with some insurance companies.

Progressive for boat and motorcycle, also check for your house
Costco for your cars
Travelers is another option for your house.
As you know, quotes and prices will be all over the place with suggestions in here because insurance companies rates vary county to county and state to state.

We are all different, I get maximum liability on everything and turn down anything unrelated such as road service etc. Im just concerned with the big stuff. I carry max liability including for uninsured and underinsured

Every insurer is going to have a different rate - because its not simply about your risk profile - but if they want your profile in their book of business - good or bad. Ya I know its weird.

My everything keeps going up. 35% over 3 years isn't bad. I read auto this year is up on average 22% - by itself - in one year.

I am all under Costco Connect. House and too many cars.
Costco was cheapest for me last switch as well. However when I pulled my daughter off and put her on her own insurance they wouldn't underwrite her - which I get, young driver. The weirdest thing is I removed her car from my policy and titled it to her, and my 2 cars are now more than 3 cars before.

Like I said insurance is weird.

They won't do homes here - Coastal even though were an awfully long way from the coast.

And credit scores/age of roof, etc.

They know two drivers can't drive three cars at once.

We had 3 drivers and 3 cars (my daughter was on the policy)

Now we have 2 cars and 3 drivers. She stays on because this is her primary residence and she is my dependent and they make you list everyone in the residence with a license so - even though she has her own car on another policy with another insurer.

So it should be cheaper. All that changed was one car went away.

Everything I’ve seen so far has been higher, no matter what.

Might help i live in one of the most dangerous states to drive in.

Just in my city alone we have had 6 accidents in the last few weeks- one fatal.

I’ve never seen this many crashes in my life-it’s like no one even cares any more……

Carrying the max liabilty insurance is smart. So much can go wrong in an accident. Recent example, a friend of mine (single mom) has an A-hole young son driver who has already had accidents and was dropped by one insurance carrier. After that the mom got him insured at a staggering $750/mo with another insurance company and he had a BAD accident the same week the policy started. Now the worst part is at these rates she went with the minimum required by law which is 30/60...this kid ran thru a red light at high speed, struck car which flipped over and the driver had to be cut from the car. There were severe injuries as well as the traffic light pole damage and 2 totaled cars. The cars were so bad you couldn't tell what they were. So here they are - the policy barely covers the other person's car, the city's property and nowhere near enough for their medical and pain/suffering. They will no doubt be sued for the remaining uncovered amount which I would not be surprised if its a million+ dollars.

SCARY stuff, which brings me to another forgotten subject. My dad never allowed us kids including me have our cars registered under his name. Only our name was allowed on the title even at the high price of insurance. I did the same with my kids. Their cars, only under their name. If 18 years old and the car only in their name they can't come after you. If he is driving one of your cars, yeah, you got problems and in this case I REALLY feel for your friend the single mom. It's terrible, hard enough being a single parent and a mom and having to deal with this, very sad. Good luck to them.

Most wage earner families need a one to two million dollar umbrella policy to cover possible situations like this. Any state minimums are asking for trouble -- one is underinsured these days.

These thieves still almost charge like one can. As someone with way more than three cars, the horrendous assumptions they make, even with classic insurance, is downright theft.
