Can you even buy a "bad" oil anymore? Even cheap syn is great!

There are no assumptions here though. Plenty of boutique oil uoa’s here to show that yes, they can go the distance across a decent spread of engine types.

Regarding 2 or 3x long OCIs, for me, the major assumption is if UOA can tell the whole story or not and I don't like to take that risk!

There is no question these higher cost "boutique oils" like HPL give longer service, and better protection. Several members here have proven that, like Astro in his V-12's.

For myself, I drive so little, I prefer a shorter OCI with a standard synthetic like Mobile 1 or Pennzoil. Even then with applying 6 month OCI's I'm probably changing it too often.

Gotta be careful with "Dollar store" and some no name gas station generic oils

Roadmax?? I think is one of them?? Black and yellow bottle

After reading many UOAs, watching video tests of, and trying the cheapest of oils you can get now, SuperTech (Walmart), Kirkland (Costco), and Amazon Basics, they all seem to be really great performing synthetics. The Kirkland 5w-30 syn at Costco today was $15/5qt jug!

We these being the bargain basement, I was thinking what oils would I actually avoid these days? Other than intentionally using the WRONG oil for an application, it seems you really can't go wrong. In the past there were known oils with waxes that sludged up engines (old Quaker State) or caused seal problems, but today are we living in a golden era of motor oils?

look at the amount of coked up piston rings. Those are oil related issues, and bad oils will cause this sooner rather than later. it's the number one cause of oil consumption these days, and often low tension rings are blamed, but they don't all do it yet they all have the low tension rings

Found it!! I bought some of this stuff a few years ago @ a 7-11 near DFW airport

It was motor oi and ATF on the clearance rack .50 cents a bottle

Anyone had any experience with this brand ??

I don't have any experience with it, but it's API Licensed. It's a Consumer Value Product, Inc. brand. CVP belongs to McLane Company, a Berkshire Hathaway owned company.

Theoretically you can, depending where you’re purchasing the oil from. Just make sure your oil comes from reputable businesses (Walmart, NAPA, Costco, Sam’s the big chain auto part stores) and meets all current api and dexos ratings

When you look at the recently posted valvoline video (syn vs conventional) which had UOA done every 1000 miles I'm inclined to say it can't. 7 stuck rings without ever running an oil too far according to UOA. carbon buildup everywhere to the point the chain tensioner failed, so dooming the engine if not taken care of.

Is 5-7 quarts of oil really something you want to save money on?
why would someone want to overpay for the same results? Especially when both the $ vs $$ have the same certs. Then you have the $$$ that do their independent testing but don’t want to pay for the dexos license.

So... Are you saying you are getting the same oil for 50 cents a quart, that you're getting at Walmart for $5.00 a quart?
I don’t follow your question. Just referencing the fact that Mobil 1 Afe sells for 24.97 vs super tech full synthetic 18.64 both are lab tested to be a 10,000 mile oil with same certs both can be had from the same store that’s a $6.33 difference. Have I used both yes, I purchased back in April a 3 pack of the Mobil Afe on sale for 63.88 that was an impulse buy being I was getting Mobil 1 on sale.

No, I'm not talking about Super Tech at Walmart. I'm talking about the 50 cent a quart crap from 7/11.

Two persons I know (NOT mechanical or "Car" types) basically refuse to consider service until / unless the dash light comes on. IMO this is too long. 100% these types of people should use a premium oil... but I'm pretty sure they just use whatever bulk oil is offered. Hopefully they are being upsold a higher tier full synth, but who knows. Saddening to be because they are not exactly flush with cash and definitely are the statistic that would benefit from getting longer than average life/use out of a car.

Don't confuse minimum cert oils with moderate / maximum dispensations.
Just because the cert exists on both quarts of oils, doesn't mean they are built the same.

I’d be willing to bet the engine is to blame in this situation. There seem to be families/series of engines that just destroy oil and get nasty no matter what the owner does.
