my work is only 4 miles from home and i drive about 6000 miles per year. I have a big engine though, M119 4.2L V8 with 105k miles.

Can a HDEO like Rotella 15w40 go 1 year between changes? Or do you guys recommend changing 2x/yr based on my uses?

Short trips = excessive moisture + fuel
I wouldn't even do a year on a synthetic with those short trips.

Change it at least 3 times a year. Or, prove me wrong with a UOA(with ~4 months of usage). Only the UOA will give you an idea if your oil can go further.

Gman posted an analysis with Castrol HM 5w30 which was like 4,000 some odd miles and around 15 months; all short trips. The report was perfect. If the engine is in perfect working condition, ie thermostat is good and not stuck open, plugs/wires etc. are good to mitigate fuel dilution, it could easily be done. I'd do 6 month intervals though if it was me.

Absolutely! Just make sure you get it out on the highway for a sustained cruise to get the temp up every other week or so... Mercedes V8's tend to run pretty warm, anyway.

8.5 quarts of 15w40 is not going to fail you, although I would do the oil & filter change in the Fall.

Cheers!

Cool -

between Rotella T 15w40 and Valvoline Maxlife 10W-40 dino oils, which would be a better choice for my uses??

That'd be the one 427.

Between those oils, the 10w is obviously gonna be better for winter temperatures. Rotella 5w-40 perhaps would be a better choice if it were to get really really cold.

I was just looking at record lows for my area and contemplating AGAIN whether a 10w would be alright for my oil consumer; with a record low of -27 and record low of -38 for the town where my parents cabin is in the mountains, scratch that one! 5w at a minimum for me.

I'd go with the Rotella T-Syn 5w40 for that Michigan weather. If you can afford to drive a M119 4.2L V8, surely you can afford the upgrade from the Rotella 15w40 once a year. Look for the Low SAPS version already seen on the shelves around here.

And you really should do at least one UOA to make sure you engine doesn't have any issues that would make the long oil change interval an unwise decision.

thanks. the rationale for staying with dino oil is not because of cost for synthetics, but if the engine has never seen synthetic for 105k miles, what's the point of switching now. in fact i'd hate to see new leaks developing after switching to synthetic.

but if i can go 1 year between changes, I might give a full synthetic a try next spring after ARX is done. Either Rotella T 5W-40 or Mobil1 0W-40

Is M119 an eaton supercharger?
Is this a ford engine?
What kind of vehicle? A supercharged jaguar or something?

It is a Mercedes Benz engine. It was in S and E class of the mid/late 1990

Choosing between "15W-40 Rotella-T and MaxLife 10W-40?"

I'd go DELO 15w40 in dino & if the winter proves to be too durn cold perhaps go to the Rotella-T Synthetic 5W-40... I just love the Amsoil AME 15w40 year-round in my '91 420SEL!

You'll know if a 15w40 weight is a problem - do you garage your MB at night?

Cheers!
