Calling all Mazda owners esp.cx70/90

My 1 year old CX-30 Turbo with 6000 mi just blew its rear differential. A week at the dealership being fixed under warranty. I wonder what kind of defect it had.

I'm glad to hear it's a warranty issue. The powertrain in my Dad's CX-5 was really quite good. I'm not sure where you live, but if you are in an area that uses salt on the roads, I would I highly recommend getting some sort of Fluid Film, lanolin-type undercoating and some good floor liners. My Dad's might have held up a little better if he had done those two things right away.

I'm normally a huge fan of the "new Mazda" (since divorcing Ford), but these were a huge swing and a miss, IMO

31mpg is only 14.8% better than 27mpg. Nothing all that crazy.

I agree, Mazdas are built cheaper than their interior look makes them appear. They creak and rattle, all while superficially looking like a Lexus. They are more like dressed up Subarus than true luxury brands.

That being said I still think they’re a good buy with good drivetrains, although I think the lack of a torque converter on the i6 is a big miss.

Mine didn't. Very solid cars. Sold my 2015 at 106K miles when the fuel pump died though, and my 2019 turbo at 80K miles. No rattles.

I'd say that, overall, car quality changed post-inflation and post-ocvid. I don't know about Mazda specifically, but I doubt they're immune.

All of my 4 have rattled, along with my current loaner. Maybe I’m just more sensitive to it.

I highly doubt that. An example of my OCD is having Kia tech line called until they figured out what the mild sound I was hearing in my EV6 GT was. It happened to be the cabin pressure vent flaps in the back fender-well. Pretty OCD about rattles.

One thing you may consider is removing the trim to verify that the rear deck-lid/spoiler bolts have not worked loose. This can happen.

I have a CX-50 and I don't think I'd buy another. Nice looking car and interior, but once you start peeling back the skin on the onion it's cheaply built with lots of dumb cost saving measures. Like how much extra would it have cost to put a light in the glovebox? Just dumb stuff like that. Also, the keyless touch sensor to unlock/lock the doors is the worst I've ever used. Any time it rains or you have dry skin it's next to useless.

To be fair, I don't think any of the CX-50 competitors at its price point could be called "luxurious". It is more "utilitarian" than it's elder cousin the CX-5 for sure.
