Friends 2.5 non turbo has consumed alittle over a quart of Rotella 5-40 in less than 4thousand miles? It now has 62,074 miles on the odometer & I said to her today. Lets give the Maxlife 5-30 a shot here to see if we can eliminate the consumption rate. The run on this 5-40 Rotella has about 3900 miles on it. Time to dump it? Car does not smoke or leak one bit?

5w-40? A bit too viscous for an automatic car though allowed in the OM - more viscous oil most likely wont help consumption - clean ring lands and grooves will.
What year? - subaru has a tech bulletin for improperly machined heads that will suck oil past the VG on the EJ253 - our '09 did that and we traded it rather than deal with reman. Sound like normal consumption if you top off - these engine want to run at least a cup to a pint low on the stick or they will burn off anything over 4 litres on a refill. (Guys: These cars do not take 5 qts!) Check for PCV issues too.

I've run both MaxLife 5W-30/10W-30 and most recently, Pennzoil conventional 5W-30, in a 99 Outback and 00 RS at 6-7k mile intervals with less than a quart of consumption between the two.

I agree that the consumption isn't that bad though.

A quart in 4K isn't bad and some Subies do seem to use a little oil even at only 62K.
I'd not use a forty grade oil in an NA.
I did use GC in ours for about 22K, but have since been using Synpower.
The engine seems fine with either and might even be a little smoother with the Synpower.
I had very low metals numbers on a UOA of a 5K run of Synpower in our Forester, and viscosity was still strong.
TBN was weak, though.
Have you checked the PCV valve?
