03 Honda CR-V loses oil like crazy!

For what it's worth at this point... My cousin thinks the 2nd video looks correct (as in same underhood situation). After I figure out what year this CR-V really is, and buy the correct PCV hose, then we'll try again.

It does at least appear that I bought the correct PCV valve.

We put in Valvoline MaxLife Synthetic Blend 5w20 at oil change 2 months ago. It was losing 5w20 rapidly (1 qt every 300 miles). We've been adding Valvoline MaxLife Synthetic Blend 5w30 as needed. The oil consumption has slowed. It's now a more liveable situation. I attribute that to 5w30.

PCV & hose replacement is still in its future. I think it will give some more improvement.

Next summer, we'll change oil to 5w30 Valvoline Restore and Protect.

If it ain't broke don't fix it? After all these conversations I'll probably order a hose for my daughters. It's not collapsed, at least not on the outside. Opposite, hers is like petrified and not the frightened/terrified meaning. The hose is like ROCK solid, can't squeeze it with fingers.

It might be original, 17 years and 243k?

If it’s 2003+ and an k24, the engine is known for stuck rings. I had one that no matter what I did, I couldn’t get the oil burning to slow down. I tried multiple piston soaks and BG EPR treatment as well. Keep it topped off with any oil, it’ll burn it all.
That sucks.......

The longer hose shown in the 2nd video is 17131-PPA-A01 per the notes in the video. You can also see this part number on the Honda label attached to the clear plastic bag at 17 seconds into the video. However, are you sure the CR-V is a 2003 and not a 2005? The 17131-PPA-A01 hose is supposed to only fit 2005 & 2006 CR-Vs with the plastic intake manifold. Note that the video shows a 2005 CR-V.

The Honda parts schematic actually shows an even longer hose that connects the PCV valve on one end and to the throttle body vacuum tube on the other end for a 2003 CR-V as part 17131-PPA-A00. Can you verify the model year and post a photo of the old hose that is currently installed on your neighbor's CR-V?
The model year has been verified using VIN to be 2003. I can't take a photo because it's still installed on car.

Understood, it appears you will need to give the VIN to the Honda parts counterperson so the correct hose can be ordered. Perhaps early 2003 CR-Vs are different from the late 2003 CR-Vs. I believe the hose configuration is dependent on the intake manifold material (i.e., cast alloy metal or molded black plastic).

Giving the VIN # to the dealership parts guy is an obvious, yet brilliant solution. 👏 🙏👍😀

This is on my daughters '08. I changed it. The old was seriously ROCK SOLID. I don't think it would have ever collapsed, it definitely didn't bend much either so would probably crack first.

I got the correct PCV breather hose ordered this time (by giving dealership parts guy the VIN #). Also I texted photos of engine to him.

So next week when my cousin comes to town, we'll replace the crankcase breather hose and PCV.

I have a feeling it's going to help.
 
Recap: The 03 Honda CRV engine has 120K on it, wasn't well maintained, and rapidly lost Maxlife 5w20 oil to we didn't know where (or why).

1st solution/bandaid we did was topping off with Maxlife 5w30. Then oil consumption reduced signifigantly. That was a good improvement.

Today my cousin finally had time to replace the crankcase breather hose and PCV. The old hose was very collapsed at one of its bends. The old PCV was very dirty, but still rattled a little bit, but not as much as it should.

We're hopeful it won't burn oil anymore. 🤞 Just for extra effort, we'll put in Valvoline Restore and Protect 5w30 at next oil change (next summer).

I think this qualifies as sweet success, 😊 but it'll take a few thousand miles to verify that all is now well with the engine.

My cousin checked my neighbor's 03 Honda CR-V EX engine oil level today. It's still at the Full mark after 1000 miles. No more oil consumption. Specifically no more oil burning. Replacing the crankcase breather hose (that connects to PCV) completely cured the oil burning.

Update 4-7-26. My cousin checked the oil level today. It's still at Full Mark after 1500 miles since oil change.
