CR-V burning oil, should I switch brands/weight?

Been reading through a lot although much of what is discussed is over my head. I'm not cutting open my filters...yet.

2016 CR-V AWD with 120k. Had the head gasket changed a while back. Oil changes have been right around 8k based on the maintenance minder. Losing about 2.5 quarts in between the last couple of oil changes. Always used 0w-20 synthetic and OEM filters.

I think I will try Valvoline Restore and Protect for my next change. Should I also change to 30 weight? I'm in Virginia so we have cold and heat but the cold never gets too bad. And since I'm at higher mileage should my OCI change?

Thanks!!

It might be recoverable. Switch to Valvoline Restore and Protect 5W-30. Do at least 4 but no less than 4 oil and filter changes at 4000-mile maximum intervals. If the Valvoline Restore and Protect is going to help, you should notice by then. If not already done, replace your PCV valve, use only the OEM Honda part from your Honda dealership. Yes, it does cost more. That engine is bad about fuel dilution, and it does have the low-tension piston rings as most modern engines have now. If the Valvoline Restore and Protect oil works, you can keep using it forever or say switch to Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 5W-30 or Mobil 1 ESP 0W-30. Always change your oil at 4000-5000 miles or 6 months no matter what engine oil you end up using. Ignore that Honda built in maintenance minder. Also, if this Valvoline Restore and Protect helps and brings it back to (reasonable) oil usage, you might want to have a tune-up and have your local Honda dealer install any ECM fuel map updates they can install that could help reduce your fuel dilution. Have you looked for oil leaks? If this doesn't work plan on an engine overhaul or remanufactured replacement or just start using a cheap 5W-30 and add oil as needed. That is my advice.

That raises many questions!

Sounds like shorter OCI's would have been better! How many quarts of oil does this car hold?

Have you checked the PCV?
Always used 0w-20 synthetic
Which 0W-20 synthetic have you been using? I hope it is not AMSOIL Signature Series! LOL

If it's fuel dilution, Changing the oil at 4000 might reduce the burning on the back end of the oci. You could try a thicker 0w20, a 5w-20, or a thin 0w-30. .02.

Head gaskets are not uncommon on the Honda 1.5 turbo.

The 2016 CRV in the US was the final year of the 4th gen CRV and the last year to use the K24 motor before Honda switched to 1.5L turbocharged engines. His CRV has a Honda K24W9 DI Earth Dreams motor.
2016 is when they started with the 1.5L turbo engine. My 2015 I bought brand new was the last year they put the 2.4L K24 naturally aspirated engine in, at least as far as The Honda CRV goes.

Thanks for all the help!
Should I have said valve cover gasket? Is a head gasket something else? They also changed the PCV, but it wasn't at a dealership so I'm assuming it wasn't OEM. Could it be that switching to OEM would make a difference? Looks like it might be 40 bucks. I know the shop charged way more for the part they used (not my normal shop, took it there in a pinch). I'll research if it's something I can change myself.

Engine holds 4.6 quarts. Had been using either Pennzoil or Castrol high mileage. I will definitely start using a shorter OCI and try Valvoline Restore and Protect 5W-30. Is OEM filter still good, or do I need something different/better?

Thanks all!

I have owned several Hondas and none of them ever needed makeup oil. Here are some particulars on the matter:
  • 1990 Accord with 2.2 liter I4. Took this car to Germany on an international gig in 1992. Drove it many mile at speeds in excess of 100 MPH. 110k on that one.
  • 2005 Civic driven over 150k before succumbing to an Octagenerian in a far larger vehicle [Ford Excursion] who didn't understand a stop sign. I walked away, albeit somewhat angry. 159k on that one.
  • 2010 Civic driven by my son before being totaled by a drunk driver in a MiniVan. No records on that one, but I think it went 30-50k miles under my watch.
My sample size is limited, but I find it hard to understand complaints of oil consumption in Hondas aside from that 1.5T trainwreck.

Incorrect. 2017 model year was the first year of the 1.5l turbo in the CR-V. 2016 was still 2.4l.

Check the pcv. My neon was consuming more oil and I ended up replacing my pcv and it helped considerably.

does the oil burn seem linear, meaning, does it burn about the same in the first half of the OCI vs the second? if not, simply ignore the Olm and run shorter ocis.

Also, it's time for Valvoline Restore and Protect 5w30. run 4 ocis without a doubt, and only judge the consumption on the last 1 or 2 oci.

ps: if it was my vehicle, I would change the PCV after Valvoline Restore and Protect. might help with ring cleaning
