I still suspect Apple won't release a car but will instead offer some kind of add-on or co-branded vehicle.

Something like "2020 Honda Civic Apple Edition featuring Apple Smart Drive."

Apple has another thing start-up car compaies don't: A large and dedicated fan base, already willing to pay more for their product.
 
But the auto business is much different than the personal electronics business. It's a lot different selling a $40,000 car that has to last 10 years versus a $500 iPhone that has to last only until the next version comes out, which is what: 6 months to a year? The thicket of regulations are a large barrier to getting on the market. And cars spend all their lives outside in the elements: wind, rain, sun, snow, salt, sandstorms, etc. iPhone's stay in peoples pockets, and may occasionally get dropped. Apple has a lot of homework to do if they want to be an auto manufacturer. I know they have enough money in the bank to buy GM if they want to, but why would they want to get into a low profit margin industry that is very nearly regulated to extinction?

I kinda think the idea is stupid.. a car is not a watch like "Gear" or a phone like iPhone.

It will only be available in black or white, Apple made white phones cool. I think it looks cheap.. anyways.. smaller screen, and only available gas from iTunes.

Also, inferior maps navigation.

But it will be SO cool. Designed in California, and made in China..

Apple like TSLA will target upper middle class and above and if they succeed in that segment it is plenty of money. AAPL did that from get go, they don't target an audience that isn't worth targeting.

If TSLA can be successful why not Apple, did TSLA folks knew how to build autos. They learnt that there is a niche market for 80K autos running on batteries. Do they make batteries NO, they get the technology and build it it volumes and do it right.

The Big3 can keep building trucks and truck based SUVs for the rest of their lives. The Big3 were mismanaged and had poor leaders.
 
Lutz is not as stupid as the media portrayed him when he worked for GM, however he does not have a crystal ball and doesn't know what will come out of Apple's efforts.

In my opinion I think if Apple feels like they can make a competitive product then by all means they should try it. More players and products to choose from was never a bad thing for consumers.
I certainly will not judge their attempts solely based on their current product lineup. For all I know, they may make a very decent car.
 
This thread is great, people calling Lutz a failure and others that have no idea how much cash Apple is sitting on.

No. You asked about Bob Lutz's qualifications to state an opinion on Apple's car project, so I posted his work history. Bob Lutz was in the auto industry longer than there has been a personal computer industry. I'll believe him about opinions on car building, and I'll believe the president of Apple on his opinions about building smart phones. Not vice versa.

I never asked about Roger Smith's qualifications.

Much of Tesla's "success" is from selling emissions credits to the Big 3. Once the Big 3 get tired of pumping their money into Tesla's pockets, one of them will buy him out and take the emissions credits for themselves.

Time will tell if TSLA is bought over or TSLA buys all of them!!

Bob does not have a golden wand to say Apple will get it right/wrong. Getting it right/wrong is in APPLs hands and with its money they sure can make money of a great commodity called automobile!!!

Only loosers loose money selling autos.
