BITOG unemployment thread

I got a lead on some potential freelance CAD work today; hoping it's enough to pay living expenses for (at least) a few months. I would be able to do the CAD work at home, which I would like very much.

If you like driving, you can find good work as a courier driver, depending on what sector of the economy you work in. A buddy of mine lost his job and has started working as a long distance medical courier for the nations largest medical courier company and he grosses about $700/week (commission - fuel cost). He transports a lot of things for various VA clinics and hospitals to specific blood and pathology labs.

Beats working fast food he tells me!

My chiropractor friend told me that recently he starts seeing more patients because they start finding employment. Maybe finally we are starting to stabilize or getting back on track.

Well, I guess I'll throw my hat in the lot.

I'm unemployed. I have been since June 2009, except for a temporary position at a bank over the past two months. I do not receive unemployment because I moved to Portland,OR from NC in July of 2009.

I moved here to be with my future wife, we will be married in Oct.

I think the thing I find most frustrating is this... No matter WHAT the position I apply for and I apply for quite a variance...it says- "Must have two years of previous experience in..."

I have a college degree, 5+ years in banking operations, Public realations & communications experience in a non-profit setting, and marketing work on my resume.

But I can't even land a office clerk/office assistant job filing documents, ordering supplies, and throwing trash away for a local attorney at $10 an hour because I haven't worked as a front desk receptionist for a total of 24months.

I've had 4 interviews in 10+ months of looking, not picking, looking. One led to a 60 temp job, which just ended.

Anyone need any help in/around Portland, OR?

GDP only grew at 2.4 percent. If you take out inventory growth I think it was only 1.3%.

I saw on tv that it will take 250,000 new jobs a month for 3 years to get down to 8% unemployment.

It doesn't look promising.

Thats 9 million new jobs. How sad. I think this is the beginning of some very tuff times ahead for our country and the folks who are actually putting money into the pot (paying their taxes and not mooching off our government).

All I know is that from this point forward..... it's every man for himself.

Don't look for it to be promising. Get used to it like it is. "Promising" means growth. Growth means debt(credit) ..growth means an even bigger crash when he credit runs out.

What type of fool throws a party every time they get a little money in their pocket knowing that they can't afford it?

People that make poor choices.

I have. My wife and I have already discussed it. If I can't land a decent job in my field (mechanical design) within the next 6 months, my wife and I are selling the house, moving the family into an apartment, and I'm going back to school full time. I want to become a Registered Nurse, and possibly a Nurse Practitioner (requires master's degree).

Any hope of your last outfit providing work from time to time? If so, then just being a BSN on per diem might give you the best of both worlds. Agency up when the work is slow ...be unavailable when the design work is flowing. I would think project work would pay a decent premium.

You've already got the clearances and whatnot.

I graduated with a Mechanical Engineer degree and after looking hard for about a year and a half.. I finally got hired.

In the words of Winston Churchill, "Never, Never give up".

My sister inlaw is a contract RN working dialysis and travels from hospital to hospital making $42 an hour.

Its good pay and there is always work, most hospitals now contract all their dialysis services to outside companies.

Gary,

I have a letter from my former employer stating that they will contact me if they are able to secure a new contract where my mechanical design talents can be utilized. The option for me to return to them remains open, but I'm not holding my breath.

For the immediate future, I'm going to have to get extra creative to earn some dough.

$42/hour is very good money. I would be willing to do almost any job for that kind of money.

See this is where the college education doesn't pay for itself. Lie on the resume about a fictitious 2 year job to get in the door.

No argument here, I was a robot and did what my parents wanted me to do. No one in my family "had been to school" (graduated from college). So off I went and I'm pretty pi$$ed that I did. I could have mae a lot more money working at my dad's shop and doing something I love- restoring cars and building engines.

And I can't bring myself to lie on a resume. I'll take the lumps and financial hardship, I just can't do it. And beside, employers in these days DON'T MESS AROUND. Even the temp agency pulled my credit and verified all my references- A TEMP AGENCY.

Know that feeling.

There was no way that I was ever NOT going to University.

My sister had the option, and my brother was allowed to drop out of HS and do a trade.

Leaves you WAY open telling lies.

Down here, businesses can be sued for providing false references (good references to get them to move on), and individuals can be held liable for faking experience.

Unemployment in NZ has just risen to 6.8,after a drop in the last quarter. We are the quietest at work than we have ever been, this week was the worst I've seen. It's going to be a slow recovery alright.
