My 1992 B2600i Mazda calls for a 51356 and my Branson 4020 turbo diesel tractor calls for a 51334.I would like to buy one filter# for both but which one is better. The two filters (Wix) have same specs for 9-11 gpm flow , nominal filtration 19 mic., bypass 8-11 psi and gasket size is same. Outside dimensions are within limits to fit either application. Burst strength is 280 psi for 51334 and 363 psi for 51356. The Beta numbers are: 2/20=6/19 for the 51356,u the 51334 are 2/20=22/40.
Which one should I use? Thanks.

As I understand it, Beta2 = 50% efficient & Beta20 is 95% efficient. And the other numbers are the micron size.

So, the 51356 is a MUCH better filtering filter compared to the 51334.

Wix's disclosure of filter efficiency illustrates an interesting consideration about using oversized filters. Many times folks assume that bigger is better (better flow, more filter media, added oil capacity, etc) while forgetting that manufacturers apparently vary filtering ability by application within a line. Wix beta numbers vary within the Wix line, and I've noticed that Motorcraft do as well.

Sometimes the oem-spec'ed filter really is the best one to use.

OK kanling just so I understand correctly. The specs would be as follows
51334 filters 50% of stuff 22 mics. and larger and 95% of stuff 40 mics. and larger on a single pass.
51356 filters 50% of stuff 6 mics. and larger and 95% of stuff 19 mics. and larger on a single pass. Heck the 51356 filters better @ 95% better than the 51334 does at 50%

Oh Roger. I goofed up. the tractor filter is a Wix cross ref. The Branson brand filters are actually made by Baldwin. I wont use anything but the OEM for my hydraulic filter but I was figuring the very available wix would be OK for engine oil.

I understand, Brandson isn't a Wix.

But I for one have used the Wix 51334 on my Maxima in place of the 51356 filter B4 Wix started publishing all this Beta data...thinking I was using a better filter than the 51356. I won't do that again.

If I were in your shoes, I'd buy the specified filter for the Mazda and tractor, and not one for both.
