Don't listen to Nick 1994. The 4Runner is possibly the worst riding vehicle available new with third row seating.
What year did you drive?

My boss bought one new a few years ago, maybe a 2015 model. Why, you have one?

Durango is a good option, as somebody else already indicated. The 5.7 has lots of get up and go if you need it.

Then my suggestion would be a Toyota Sequoia. The best overall-not necessarily. But better reliability than the Suburban and Tahoe.

IMO a seven seater SUV is pretty big - like Suburban or van sized.
Many of the 3 row vehicles (like mine) are realistically more like a 4+2.
Think I'd get that sorted before looking at John Doe's favorite on BITOG.
(People and cargo etc)

I would say Toyota Landcruiser. If that's too expensive, then the Toyota Sequoia. The Sequoia is larger than the Landcruiser, but not quite as legendarily indestructible as the Landcruiser.

Oh, so you haven't driven one. I've test driven a 2016 4Runner and have put thousands of miles on my dad's FJ Cruiser (very similar suspension) and the FJ rides fantastic and can really take a corner.

Open to Audi, Porsche, Toyota, Escalade, etc.

Really want something that will be reliable, SAFE and can seat from 5-7 people, comfortably.

We are known to keep our cars.

I have not purchased a brand new car since my 91 Honda Civic Si which went to 515k miles on the same engine.

Our family car is an 02 Silverado that currently has 315k miles. Wife purchased the truck(19mpg)new.
Wife's truck broke down yesterday, possible fuel pump/fuel regulator, and we just don't think that the truck should be the family car anymore.

I do own a 1970 280sel, 1979 300sd, and a 1988 300sel, all Mercedes, but the wife wants something newer.
She is not asking for much but I don't want to spend the money on a lame SUV that isn't reliable.
I would rather spend more money and give her something nice and reliable and SAFE, big plus if it can be worked on by a me (DIY)

We looked at the Chevy Volts and Toyota Prius yesterday.

You may want to have a look at Toyota RAV4, Subaru Forester, and Mazda CX-5.

My son just leased one of these. I would classify the ride right between an offroad vehicle and a new pickup truck. The ride would be satisfactory to some.

Legendary reliability however.

BMW X5 -- safe, 3 rows, reliable and comfortable.

Safety wise, hard to beat a Land Rover, like an LR3 or LR4. Good third row too.
Reliability wise, mine has never left me stranded, but it does need work from time to time. Awesome to drive. Rides great. 150k miles on mine and no plans to get rid of soon.
