Best oil

I just get into the minutia of it because it is interesting. It is like a hobby.

^^This is what brought me here when I first joined and what still brings me here every day. I find it fascinating, fun, and interesting. I honestly miss all the freezer tests, lubricity machine tests, oven tests, etc. I guess it's like a grown-up's science fair. Remember how much fun all those science experiments were as a kid? I always loved that stuff!

The test is a good source of amusement.
A non-API Group IV/V vs an API group III in random non-statndaed tests chosen for ease of application. Reminds me of the old Amsoil Tests.

I used to go by brands first, not much now. I am coming to the realization that if the oil meets the specs required in the manual than you are good to go. My cars spec API SL & SM grade oil. Since most current oils are SN or Dexos (even better), I figure that they are plenty good enough. With regular use, good quality filter, 5000 OCI change, and regular topping off if needed, it would be difficult to measure if one brand is marginally better than the other, the bottom line being they are all good 'enough'.

But the lure of the "best oil" is nonetheless quite enticing. The way look at it nowadays: look up the Lubrizol oil spec charts. Find the spec which is most demanding. For example you may choose MB 229.51 or another Euro spec. Find a oil brand in your required grade that meets that spec, and if the price point is acceptable, or even better the same as the rest, then use that one.

Right now, Walmart likely has all the Pennzoil Synthetics priced the same around $23, including the Euro with meets the MB229.51 spec I think. That might be one way to arrive at 'best oil' answer, at least in my mind.

I had an uncle in Rochester NY who had a Pinto and it got rear-ended. He got out of it and it did go up in flames. For the rest of his life he bad-mouth Ford and swore he would never buy another Ford product, and he never did.

There are lots of dependable oils. That you can buy on sale for 1/2 or 1/3 the price of the so called best oil. Frankly I don't see those best oils in most cases with UOA that looks twice as good as those other oils the get the ole Boutique oil Poop poop talk.

One of my high school teachers had the same thing happen to her. Lost a lot of belongings in the back seat and hatch, as she didn't dare get back in the car to grab things.

Sorry for the off topic post.

Alright I have to know. Where can I get Pennzoil Platinum Ultra Euro L 5W-30 VW 504.00/507.00 for $3.50 a qt?

You can't. The 504/507 oils usually run near 10 bucks a quart for name brands and up to $15 for boutiques like Red Line with 70% group IV, 20% group V as last reported by the Russians. The Mobil 1 ESP can be had on sale at Napa periodically for $6..+ a quart. Don't know how much group III it contains but is a bargain on sale. I won't buy Castrol but I see it on sale for around $9 a quart sometimes.

ok 3 times cheaper in my case. Right now 5 quarts of 5w30 signature series and the Amsoil filter is $89.59 that's including the one year preferred membership. Pennzoil ultra platinum 5w30 5 quarts and a wix filter is 33$ from Amazon.

I think his point is that excluding filter, amsoil ss is $10 +/- per qt. and you can't find PU for $3 +/- per qt unless it's called ST.

Yeah but it's not 10$ a quart if you have to pay $20 to become a preferred member.

Well, I haven't posted this one in a while...
