Best filter for preventing start up rattle???

The Xtended Guard became the Ultra ... both are "XG" series filters.

Only by part number are they the same. The Ultra is a HUGE upgrade to the extended guard. But thats for another discussion.

Have you tried 0w30? Mine took a couple oil changes to reduce once I switched; had been using Amsoil 10w30, went to 0w30 and it hardly ever does it any more.

I've not tinkered with oils other than going thinner in winter (which helps a lot). Been focusing on filters for now, if this one doesn't do it I'll work some more on oil choices.

I have an '07 DGC with the 3.8L (91k miles). My startup clatter was really starting to annoy me so I started the hunt to find the right combo to minimize it. I settled on a Napa Gold 1515 and M1 0w30...its almost totally stopped the clatter (I hear it for 1-2 seconds as opposed to 30 seconds)! I am on my 1st fill of M1 0w30 and this engine seems to really agree with it. Previous fills were PYB 5w20 and VWB 5w20. I dont agree with Chrysler's change from 5w30 to 5w20 in the '07 MY...CAFE I'm sure. I think the biggest factor though was the NG 1515 filter; it is literally an inch taller than the stock NG 1085/MO-090.
 
Update:

I got the FL-400S on this morning after letting it sit all night. I made a couple observations as well. First only about 2-3 tablespoons of oil ran out when I took the oversize Extended Guard XG8A off, so it looked to me like the oil may have drained back down yet again. I put on FL-400S, started it and checked for leaks (there were none). After letting it run a good bit to get hot I let it sit for 45 minutes and checked the oil level. It only needed 1/4 quart to top back off. That suggested to me the XG8a had not been holding very much oil, and also that the capacity of the FL-400S is not much (which is I want to see if it will help combat rattle).

Not dogging on the premium Fram I've had this issue with every filter I've tried so far, although in the end once it got cold I'd say the Fram was rattling more for me than say the FL-1A I'd tried.

Also was surprised at how black the oil was. I'd noticed in other vehicles the Castrol HM seemed to really do some cleaning and at 3900 miles on this OCI it seems to be doing the same in my Jeep, which is one of the reasons I tried it.

As long as I have no leak issues with the FL-400S I'll leave it on for the end of this OCI and throughout the next. Next fill will be a thinned blend of Castrol HM again, 5w20 and 5w30.

I agree Chrysler's jump to 5w20 seems more CAFE driven to me than anything else.

My "cold" start ups through out the winter will generally be in the 20's and 30's F. I think an 0w30 may actually be thicker at those temps than some 5w30's, but I'll have to look into that if what I'm trying now doesn't work.

Very strange. That is the only filter I've ever HAD start-up rattle on.

Each vehicle takes filters differently. Or perhaps it was a bad batch but I know I'm not the only one who has experienced this with PC's.

I am piggybacking on what "shipo" used way back when he had DGC/Chrysler T&C (referenced on a different Forum). He tried many different filters and settled on a MC FL-1A, said it was the only filter that stopped the clatter. The way I look at it is having a larger filter (3.3/3.8L v6, vertical application, base up) will allow more of that initial push of oil through the engine (sitting in the filter upon startup). I dont know if this is the correct thinking but in my case it has worked well.

My cold start ups will reach well below 0* in the dead of winter; but thankfully the van sits in a tuck under garage 90% of the time. I hope the M1 0w30 flows better than any dino 5w30 at those temps!
 
KCJeep,all this reading i'm doing about your problem has got me thinking about my faint start up rattle.When 2010_FX4 sent me 12 qts. of MS5K oil I changed my oil and shared the good deed with an older disabled woman in my complex and gave her an oil change,which left me with 1 qt. I was thinking,maybe next oil change I should go back with 0W20 or 0W30.I do know this,the MS5K oil has made the start up rattle on my engine somewhat more faint then before with other oils.I am going to look into it and see if it is made in 0W20 or 0W30. Opinions?

I would not be surprised at that, the Mobil Super line is among the thinner oils and usually with a good VI IIRC, so I imagine it would definitely help start up.

I'm not a Mobil guy at all though I don't know if it's available in anything 0w.

I'm convinced I've done all I can do filter wise for my issue, so now I'll wait and see how it turns out. If the filter isn't enough I'll have to start exploring even thinner, better flowing oils for sure, at least for the winter months.
 
I was going to suggest NAPA 1516, but that is the same as the FL400S. You could try NAPA 1348, a shorter 1516, if worried about filling problems. Unless oil pump is junk, I don't see how oil is back flowing thur it.
I would try some SeaFoam or Rislone to clean out and free up the lifters.
Any good synthetic oil filter would help also, better flow period.

No offense,but i'm not going to add any snake oil to my engine.As I have stated before,my engine has been making this rattle since day 1. (6 miles bought new)I'm thinking a 0WXX oil will eliminate the noise.
 
I don't believe in mechanic-in-a-can. But, I know SeaFoam and Rislone can get the varnish gunk or whatever you call it cleaned out without hurting engine. Seen it done many, many times.
If bought new why didn't warrenty fix this problem? Rattle, rattle cannot be considered "normal" in a new engine.
Not going to start argument here, but I have no problem using above products when needed.
It might be worth a try to use Joe Gibbs Hot Rod oil. It has all the good stuff plus a cling-on additive so no dry starts. I use the 15W50 dino in my 440 Mopar. Car sits sometimes 2-3 months at a time. Used to use Penn 10W40, then Mobile 1 15W50 syn, both would let lifters tick on start-up. With the Gibb's oil no ticking at all.
Just a thought...

I brought it up to the dealer several times and they claimed it was normal.We even went on the lot and started several new trucks,various engines,and they ALL had that faint rattle sound.As I stated before,my rattle is very "faint," but is still there.
When I use to build engines some of my friends wanted to use their POS engine until I built theirs.I would run a mixture of kerosene and oil 4to1 to clean the engine out.Worked like a charm.
I don't think my problem is lifter related,just oil related,or like the dealer said,"normal."

From what you're saying there, the best you could hope for is to reduce the rattle down to the way it was when new by using the best oil & filter combo. Sounds like an inherent design issue with this engine.

Note on M1 0w30...in our 4.0 it made more than twice the iron of any other oil tested....flat tappets...
