Start up rattle on cold days

Seems like ever since the temp has dropped, my crv has rattled on start up. I recently changed the oil and filter; Valvoline R+P and an 84356. As others have stated, maybe the adbv is bad? If that’s the case, I think I’ll pick up an OEM Honda filter and try that. The VTC actuator was rencently changed so I don’t think it’s that. Maybe the timing chain; seeing how the car has over 180k on what I think is the OG chain. Should I try the new Honda filter, or should I just go get an Endurance?

180k?...What year is that?
Maybe employ the "clear flooded engine" technique to pressurize the oiling system?

PERSONEL SNARKY: Try an ACDelco filter.
I feel their ADBVs are consistently good.

Any time you have rattling or engine noise after an oil change always replace the oil filter, best to go with OEM when available, keep in mind Honda OEM filters are based on the Fram EG/TG line if you cannot buy a Honda filter I would go for a TG.

Start up rattle can be rocker arms (usual case) or piston slap. I had piston slap on my old F150. I immediately dumped the recommended 5w-20 and installed 5w-30 and every thing has been fine. No, not a thicky thread. The 4.9l was never designed for 5w-20 but Ford said it was now recommended. Who was I to question Ford?

What is the rattle and how long does it last? Lots of videos on the VTC actuator so compare if the same. IIRC many of the replacement VTC actuators suffered the same fate and sometimes quickly. Just replacing the spring is an easier option. Spring-Start.com

My '17 Accord 2.4L had a TSB for the timing chain tensioner as there was some that had a bad seal and would leak, letting the chain get some slack. Sounds a lot like the VTC also but shorter. Mine was like split second but when you know your car you hear these things. Mine was covered under the powertrain warranty at dealer. Those that have done outside of that show its not hard or expensive.

Filter change first.

It rattle for a second at most

I just replaced the Carquest blue filter on the crv and installed an oem honda one. I won’t know if it’s fixed until tomorrow morning when I start it leaving for work. I cut the Carquest open and saw no visible indications of a faulty adbv or anything else.

Something obvious yes but still it may be hard to tell if it's sealing properly.
I would start with a silicone ADBV. Not sure if Carquest blue or Honda filters are silicone

Yes, the Carquest Premium (blue label) has a silicone ADBV.

It's a remote possibility (pretty rare) that the seal job on the base plate is bad, and if so it can leak down even if the ADBV is good.

That will be a good time to record the noise for us to hear.

Just a few rambling thoughts.

An ADBV leak would manifest an assembly/component defect immediately which it did not.

You installed a cleanup oil in a high mileage engine.

You had maintenance on the VTC. Why? What were the symptoms leading up to this repair?

Honda uses fine mesh screens in front of VTC oil channels (AFAIK)

- You are starting the vehicle at colder ambient temps. These aggregate facts would seem to point to obstructed flow - either by particulate accumulation/ agglomeration/damming or filter media cold-flow performance - if you rule out any worn mechanical part issues. Given the vehicle age I would not rule out a timing system at end of service life.

Did you use 5W20 VR&P or go up a grade?

I just pulled a CQ Premium off my Ford that was only in service 2 weeks - but that was due to moderate weeping, and I was also diagnosing a performance issue and wanted to reset to factory.

Good luck

- Arco
