Best dino oil for 10K OCI on hard-driving Miata?

I cringed when I read the thread topic. I immediately had visions in my mind of varnish stains everywhere on that engine; it would be a sickening site to see the engine at the end of 10K with its valve covers off.

What is so bad about sliding under the car once in awhile and draining the oil?

I just don't get it.

Not sure I'd want to push dino 10k especially if your going to be driving the car hard. M1 can't be beat for extended drains and will easily go 10k. I'd go with M1 10w-30 HM which should hold up well in the Tx heat. Also has higher HTHS (3.66) than the regular M1 10w-30.

Even Mobil 1 drained every 5K/5 months shouldn't be too much money.

Assuming the engine doesn't take more than 5 quarts:

$23.67 divided by 5 = 4.734 or $4.75 a month.

So basically the cost of a hamburger once a month for a healthy engine.

I just don't see the point in pushing an oil so far when they're really not that expensive.

If you could find a 10w-30 HDEO in CJ-4 like Rotella or Delo, I bet it would make the distance, but I'd get a UOA to make sure. BUT, why? 5k can't be that hard to do!

Just tossing out an idea: what if I leave my pain-in-the-____ filter for the full 10K miles and change the oil with a 5K OCI. That OCI would be overkill for a synthetic, probably, but would 2 changes of a good dino at 5K be better than a single change of synth. at 10K?

The costs would be the same, perhaps, but I would think 2 dino changes would be better for the engine vs. one long change with synth. Agree?

Sounds like a good plan. Use an Amsoil EaO oil filter, if available.

When I used to work at a lube shop we would cringe at the sight of a miata, to me they are one of the most difficult and messy cars to service...however they are one of the most satisfying and fun cars to drive. So I can see why you wanna go 10k. You need Amsoil, Redline, Royal Purple, Schaffer's or Mobil 1 Extended. I would go Amsoil as it comes to your door and the EAO filter are made for extended drains. Do a UOA... There are Amsoil dealers on this website and they are not hard to find nor are they pushy, they have been helpful to me. I wanted to 7500 miles in my 02 Prizm simply because I am not allowed to change oil at my apartment, and the less other people touch my vehicle the better. Good Luck...

Ok... I own a Miata. And although I don't redline it as much as you do, I don't baby it either. I live in AZ. 116degs!

My obvious question to you is: Why 10K OCI's? The Miata has a 4qt. sump and is very easy to change oil on. Plus... I'm sure you know that almost every Miata starts the old HLA-ticking around 3K. For me, I've pushed 5K on Maxlife Syth. But I would recommend 5-6K on Maxlife or PP synth and
that way you're covered.

I say do what you said....use a good filter, whatever dino oil is on sale and change the oil every 5-6k/filter every 10-12k. For most people, that's 1 filter change per year and 2 oil changes.

I'm not too up to date on filters, but I've heard the M1 extended performance and EaO are good.

Have you looked to see if there is a filter relocation kit available for that car?

The manual doesn't make allowances for synthetic oil, and recommends an OCI of 7.5K or less, IIRC.

Haven't looked into a filter relocation kit, but I'll keep that in mind, thanks. Which a 10K OCI, I can rotate the tires at the same time, which makes removing the filter a lot easier.

I think there is some misunderstanding with some folks that this is a cost issue. It's absolutely not. It's about convenience and, within those confines, protecting the engine as much as I can. I thought dino could protect my high-revving engine for 10K but if you folks say it can't, then I won't even try.

I go 10k oci's (using M1 10w-30 but just switched to the 10w-40 last change) in my Chevy Cavalier and don't have any problems at 150,000 miles. I could probably go further but I figure I have got my moneys worth at that point.

If filter is hard to get to, why not do 5k OCI and change the filter every other OCI? Most filter can last that long and is recommended to change only every other time. For 5k OCI, any SM oil will do.

Hi austai,

I used to live in Houston, now in Florida. I own a ’97 Miata, and sold a ’91 Miata at 240,000 mi. The ’91 had nothing but M1 15W-50 for its entire life under my care, and used no oil when sold. The 15W-50 is formulated like a diesel HDEO, and offers extra protection in the Texas heat. There was just a small amount of wear on the ‘91’s cam lobes at 185,000 mi, at the last belt change. I went 6000 mi/6 mo for an OCI. Same for the ’97 I own now at 140,000 mi. I normally use the M1-108 filter, or the Factory filter.

I feel your pain about the oil filter change. I hand tighten only, left hand, from above, that way you can hand remove the filter after the motor cools down a bit. Check with a flashlight up under the rear of the passenger front wheel with the engine running to make sure your filter is not leaking.

They may have a rotten filter location, but driving them is a real pleasure!

Why not get an UOA done at like 5k with any oil you like, and then push it as far as possible with the data that is given back from that UOA?
