I know there aren't many fans here of 10W-40 but I was wondering is there a conventional (or high mileage) 10W-40 that is better than the rest?

Thanks

Lot of variables there in that question friend....what are your mods...I assume you have a Mustang GT...what are your driving habits...where do you live...North Pole...Sahara...etc.....me I'm in South Texas...Drive an 04 GTO highly modified and use Amsoil 10-40......Mobil 1 0-40 European is also great stuff.....Of course it all depends on your oil change intervals...your engine/mods....why are you so set on 10-40 anyway?

Tough time to be asking because of the switchover from SL to SM. If it were SL I would say Valvoline Durablend and/or Maxlife are very good products. If you wanted a heavy duty additive level, Citgo Ultralife (high mileage) would be good. I just don't know about the SM oils. Lot of other good 10w40s out there. One of the very best might be Redline at $8 per quart.

MaxLife and Durablend are great products, DB was even A3-rated for a while. I am eyeing Castrol GTX 10w-40 though because I don't want any ester content. Why not consider a 15w-40? Delvac 1300S supposedly pumps like a 10w.

There are some real Syn Blend 10w-40's in the USA that meet :

API SJ/CF, ACEA A3/B3/B4, MB 229.1, BMW, Porsche, VW 500.00/505.00

These would be AGIP , Elf , Motul and Lubromoly but they set you back in price because of shipping .

I went with the Delo 400 15w-40 , the new formulation looks really good (Virgin sample section), lots of Moly and only $6.00 a gallon at wally world, figured it was worth a try.
