Basic Questions about the AR 15

I built one back in the 80's on a Quality parts (Bushmaster) lower. Sold it about 5 years later. Then bought a Bushmaster about 10 years ago. Never had any problems with either one. I have not been to the parts bins at the gun shows for about 20 years, but back then there were a lot of M16 parts being sold. The BATF put out an advisory indicating that if you were caught with ANY M16 parts in your rifle and you did not have a class III permit you could be in big trouble. So if you decide to build one, know the difference between M16 parts and AR15 parts. I know the Trigger, disconnector, hammer, safety, and bolt carrier are different. There may be others that I don't remember. Of course an AR15 lower won't have the holes for the auto sear.

There are many other letters from the ATF stating that M16 bolt carriers, bolt carrier groups, and some other parts are not illegal to install in an AR-15. I think the most important parts that constitute an illegal AR are found in the lower receiver area. I am not aware of any web vendor or gun shop that will even sell you any full auto capable lower parts without a class III. You can buy M16 BCG's everywhere with no license required.


A lot of guys use the M16 bolt carrier groups because M16 bolts are heavier (more material on the bottom) which moderately slows the cyclic rate of the rifle. Some say this leads to lower felt recoil. Another big advantage is that slower cycling eases extraction, which is particularly important on short carbine length gas systems.

All that being said, I run standard AR-15 bolt carrier groups and haven't had a single problem. In my opinion, an AR-15 should only use AR-15 parts, but YMMV.

Good info, Its been a while since I have built one. I know bushmaster won't sell you M16 lower parts. The ones I used to see where at gun shows, which has probably changed by now too.

I have been a "lurker" in Saturnfans.com for the past year or so. I have done a lot of "absorbing" of information over there instead of posting. I frequent the S Series area over there. That is a great site with lots of help for Saturn owners. I spend a lot of time mostly on AR15.com and then BITOG after that.
 
I agree, an Eotech, or an M68. Both have been extensively fielded and tested/proven under some harsh conditions.
 
So, other than battery life or the metal guard, is there any other difference between the Bushnell and the Eotech? There is a significant price difference.
