I know its talked about all the time but just wondering what everyone now thinks. Fram Extraguard, Purolator Classic, Or Standard Wix?

1. Purolator classic
2. Fran Extra
3. Wix

Not talking about extended drain or more expensive filters

I will start it off. I like Fram era... I like the texture grip and I don't think its as junky as people think.

just the standard wix. honestly i threw that in there as a nod to all the Wix people. If your at walmart and its time to buy a filter with your oil of choice and your not going of 10,000 mile drains what do you buy?

Standard Wix is well above the other two IMO, I'd put the Pro-Tec/Napa Pro Select more in line with the other two.

I'd still rank them

1) Pro-Tec/Napa Pro-Select (Superior construction, good media)

2) Fram Extra-Guard (Not the prettiest, but they get the job done)
3) Purolator Classic (Tearing issues being the main concern here)

+1

It's what's on the inside that counts.

thanks for the heads up. I never thought of napa pro select. I will check it out. With that said until i joined here I used Fran orange can and never had an issue strange how its thought of as being so [censored].

now just to confirm E core? is that some plastic core instead of metal? last I noticed Fran Extra and Puolator are metal cores right? I could be wrong so don't freak out. Just looking for some thoughts

Hastings/Casite is at least as good as the Wix, & better than the Fram Extra Guard & Puro Classic. Ecores can blow out through the cage, & Napa Pro Select combo valves aren't the greatest design.

Hastings are better than the Fram / Purolator. While the Wix is going to be better than Hastings / Fram / Purolator. Due to the silicone ADBV and higher quality media.

I can't get Wix in my area so I don't care about them. Of the options provided, I'd choose a Fram Extra every time. They get the job done perfectly fine, everybody just has an illogical phobia of "cardboard" end caps. I'd trust that "cardboard" over a Tearolator any day. If it wasn't for the tearing issues, which may be resolved now (???), the Classic wins. But as it stands now, Fram.

Wix is a mid-tier filter in my opinion. and one of the best Cellulose media filters.

The fram orange can and the Purolator classic are both economy filters.

out of those two i would choose a Fram. I have zero issues with Extra Guard fram filters. I Ran one 8k mile on my silverado and cut it. The filter looked great. Not as pretty pleat wise as a wix or a higher end Fram, but it certainly does it's job well for $5.

If your motor has a tendency to drain back and start dry or partly dry, the WIX (Napa Gold same...) will likely be your best bet. About the best anti-drain-back-valve (ADBV) in the business. Works real well to stop light synthetics from sneaking back past the filter

If you can't get WIX (white can at O Rielly's), you can always get Napa Gold which is the same filter. Very good stuff

I agree on Baldwin being the other go-to filter for tricky situations.

Fram TG will do fine for short OCI's and cars with modest oil pressure.

The ACDelco Professional Classic metal center tube could be compared to these filters too. Cost about $4.19 before discounts, so they are in the ball park price wise.

For a filter for your Avalon, don't ignore the Motorcraft as an option. I know use them on our 1mz-fe equipped Lexus. Excelent filter for low dollars. The motorcraft options for the metric threaded Honda and (I think) Nissan is not as compelling.

An Fl-400S on your Avalon is as good as a standard Wix/Napa Gold IMO, and about 1/2 the price ($3.70 vs. over $7 around here for the Napa/Wix). I like the fact Toyota uses standard threads there and not metric; wider selection and more competitive options thus available.

wix is the superior filter the problem with wix is the average do it yourselfer cant find them unless they go to the rip off auto parts stores and even then they are hidden behind the counter

You're buying too much Framboy propaganda. Puro has just updated their filter line. Now all the Framboys can whine about is the paint.

Not on your list but the Toyota dealer will put the Toyota Denso filter on. They can be found in the low priced $4 range. I saw Walmart had the Fram Ultra for about $6.50 in the XG3614 size, which is for the Avalon. That's only $2-3 more, must be a sale price.
