Just curious who made these, for arguments sake?

The question sparked after I was commenting on a blown engine that was due to oil failure, and the motor had a wix on it. I wondered if the maker of these two brands are better than wix. Any info is appreciated.

just to put info out there. my dad used fram filters on our john deere lawn mower that had a kohler engine in it. never had an issue with the engine, it still runs good now (our neighbor bought it from us and my dad maintains it for them)

not sure who makes the oe filters but the one i took off looked similiar to a purolator from what i could tell.
i've used a champ/supertech 3614 on my 15hp b&s since new. it works well, slightly longer and have never had any issue. the price diff is $2 vs $9 locally.
the motor probably did fail due to oil or lack of it. those things will run for a long time with no oil at all.

I have seen many engine failures due to other brand oil filters,Most likely you are just buying 1 oil filter per year anyways so why dont you just by the OEM. If your going to buy an aftermarket filter I would stay with a known filter that are made for small engines, ROTARY, STENS, OREGON, are good aftermarket companys for the small engine, and they cost maybe 1/3 to 1/2 less than the OEM.

By the way if you have as much room on your application as I do you may try a Motorcraft FL400S. It is what I use all the time now on my Craftsman 26 HP Briggs and Stratton garden tractor.

I checked the filter stats for a Kohler oil filter vs a Baldwin and a Fram PH 3614. Other than the color. $4.00 for the Fram and over 18.00 at the lawn mower shop that sold us the mower. The filter media, thread size, ADBV, and bypass opening pressure were all as/per owners manual. And I can find Fram PH3614's anywhere. No problems so far on three oil changes. You can compare filters on Baldwin filters web site.
