Audi Says Goodbye to IC Engines

It’s just virtue signaling. If they really wanted to make a difference they would phase out ICE in China…
Not really possible when you have 500 million potential customers in rural areas which require upgrades to the power infrastructure. In any case that's a decision of the govt in China not Audi.

Nonsense. The interstates are clogged with motorists of all sorts, all of whom need far more energy density than batteries can provide. Jaguar, Audi, VW and others will find themselves unable to sell their products to customers with real needs.
Europeans drive approx 7,000 miles/yr. I think the average lease on an Audi in the US is 10k/miles yr or less. I think they'll do fine.

:ROFLMAO: That infrastructure in the US is so much more prepared for ICE phase out.

California will lead the way.

Just so we are clear - Audi is absolutely doing this to virtue signal with their target demographic. They want to sell cars and their clientele are majority urban wealthy - EXACTLY the type that they are signaling.

My point about China is that the world is giving China a pass on being the world leader on emissions while using gov subsidized cheap Chinese Labor to mine rare earth metals and offshore dirty EV battery and panel production.

When you look at the scale of human rights abuses and destruction caused by our own western virtue signaling it’s really just embarrassing.

Proponents seem perfectly fine with it as long as it’s happening somewhere else. Welcome to the world we live in.

A lot can happen in 10 yrs. The problems with California isn't technical but one of competing priorities. They way things are trending I expect a mass exodus from the state over water/forest fires, and the grid will surely be able to handle those who remained behind.

What about households with four drivers? Where will they park for recharging? How many cars can be charged at once?
Audis are luxury cars. People with electric Audis can just park all 4 of their cars in the garage.

And by then they'll be able to drive probably 1,000 miles on a charge. Why would you have to charge all 4 at once? Or even charge one of them in a week?

You are aware that VW made this same announcement over two years ago right? Do you really think that Audi would not follow VW? These companies along with everyone else have been investing billions of dollars over the last couple of years into developing BEV's.

You let me know when California implements the needed infrastructure improvements to facilitate a wholesale transition from ICE vehicles.

They have neither the regulatory flexibility, nor the bureaucratic prowess to facilitate the improvements that need to be made.

Companies and governments make proclamations all the time. They are specifically done to signal to an electorate or clientele. The real ICE transition is going to be dirty, expensive, and wholly unpleasant for taxpayers and the middle class.

Electric is trendy, and possibly the future. It’s not the future on the timescale being pushed.

IL is shutting down a Nuclear power plant in September of this year, and there is no replacement plant in the works. Wind is the answer, from what the locals are telling me.

Adding electric cars will not help that situation. While I would happily drive one, there are concerns like this one that have me hesitant in signing on the dotted line for one.

I'm sure they just came to this decision and didn't do any market research or forecasting at all

Knee jerk reaction to the agenda. This is what you get when the opinions of a 16 yr old with less brains than a 50c cigar cutter and geriatric gigolo (not mentioning any names, not political) are considered relevant experts.

I’m mixed on this. It will work for some, not for others. In a way it’s bad - those without the means for all the right tools (a short distance and long distance vehicle), they will be compromised. At the same time the opposite is the case, use electric where it makes sense, and leave other resources like liquid fuels for applications that really need it. Its pretty silly to burn half a gallon of liquid fuel so your 2500 pickup can be driven unloaded three miles each way to the circle K to get a cup of boiled peanuts.

Audi is just a car company, they can go to bean power for all I care. None of my business. What they really do instead of plan will be dictated by the market. There is a context to all these stories about the future. Some guy says something and it all takes off as if it is written on stone tablets by Moses.

The omission of names means your post isn’t political? Is that really the precedent we’re looking to establish?

Texas has wide electric scale power outages and brownouts. A recent news article described how the Texas electric utility remotely reset families’ smart thermostats to 78 degrees, causing families to awaken in the middle of the night in a pool of sweat in their own homes. The power grid cannot even handle heating & cooling needs. Now add to that (average) three cars and trucks per household on electric chargers.
