Has anyone here on this site, tired ATF-4 in applications other than Chrysler, Jeep, Mitsubishi; or whereever else ATF-4 is spec'd?

Such as in a GM, Ford, Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Mazda?

It will not be long until all transmissions are sealed up like some of the Chrysler products. That will eliminate all the guess work and filters and such and you will save money and sleep over the transmission business stuff. Of course there are 1000's of cars left to play with and take our money.

Why ? Use what is spec'd in your app. Using a non spec'd fluid in a auto transmission can send it the a early grave. A auto trans is expensive, proper fluid is not.

I have used it in a pinch(it was all that I had) for a friends transmission that was low on ATF and had to pour in 4qts in his Monty Carlo(DexIII). He never experienced anything bad. But, it was only 4 qts in the whole system.

I am not suggesting to put the ATF+4(see, I got it) in anything other than the proper applications but, it is a Friction Modified ATF that may be used in an emergency.

I always thought that it "COULD BE" better than other FM'd ATFs!

Ah-Ah-Ah Choooo!

Thank you ;/

I used some leftover ATF+4 in a 2005 GMC transfercase that called for Dex III. I figured if it was good enough for a NP tranfercase in a Jeep, it should work in a NP transfercase in a GMC. Would I use it in a different automatic transmission? Probably not.

I think ATF+4 works fine in other transmissions. IIRC, some folks here have tried it at times and it works fine in other applications. Dodge RWD transmissions used to call for DexIII, then switched over to ATF+4 at some point with basic same hardware. Same with some Jeeps.

I guess we could say that ATF+4 may not be optimum for other transmissions but, could work in a pinch as some of the other "One ATF for all Transmissions"(MaxLife, IMV)

I used Mobil Super ATF+4 to flush/fill a 2002 Subaru transmission and power-steering about two years ago. It has now been drain/filled, and the power-steering completely flushed, with Valvoline MaxLife. The old fluid was a bit darker than I was expecting (not that it means much) but I did notice the power-steering felt much better (very smooth) after the change to MaxLife.

Overall I would say that ATF+4 works fine and is far superior to the Dexron III spec, but I like the price and response of MaxLife (at least in the power-steering) much better. Everytime I drive now I notice how buttery smooth the steering is.

Given that ATF+4 has more friction modifiers and is generally a slipperier, lighter fluid, it would probably work in a Dex/Merc application, if you can handle the possibility of your shifts being softer. More then likely most new transmissions would compromise for that difference, though.

Some Chrysler transmissions (briefly) worked fine on Dex/Merc, some experienced funny shifting issues with it, but in general it was fine (up until it killed them, IE 41TE's). I would say that ATF+4 is a possibility though as an experiment, not as an everyday thing.
