Toyota S50 transmission - ATF or Redline MT-LV?

Hello,

I have a 1987 Toyota Corolla CE80 with 1C 1.8 diesel engine and S50 manual transmission. European model, last months of E8 Corolla before E9 came. Workshop manual call for ATF in this particular application. It's an exception - all other manual transmissions in E8 call for a regular 75W90 GL-4 oil.

Obviously the biggest difference between 75W90 and ATF is viscosity - 75W90 is waaaay thicker.

So what would you use? ATF as in the workshop manual or maybe Redline MT-LV? It is much closer in viscosity to ATF than to 75W90. I have both Amsoil ATF and Redline MT-LV on my shelf and it's pretty hard to decide what to use.

And it's also worth mentioning that newer applications of S50 transmissions with C series diesel engines call for 75W90 or ATF, even though all S50 transmissions are rather the same.

Well, I suppose if the manual specs an ATF then that would be the natural answer. Amsoil & Redline have shown good products on here so can't really say one way or the other but that doesn't help you either. I'm usually happy w/what I've learned from Amsoil over the years & they do strive to offer good oil.

When I was a toyota dealer tech back in the 90s, I fixed plenty of shifting issues by draining out gear oil and re-filling with ATF (correct fluid). ATF works fine...why change away from it? GL5 really makes 'em shift like crap....GL4 is OK but probably consumes 1/8 of the power that thing makes....ATF is better.

@3VZ If it actually specifies ATF and not an automatic, I would use the Amsoil ATF, not the fuel savings version. Redline D4 and HPL's Manual Transmission Life 75W75 are in the same category, that is, a 7.0cSt@100C fluid.
