Another youtube FRAM video

The one I cut open recently did not have the metal clamp to hold the filter media together. I was simply glued together, and the glue looked to be used sparingly. What made me feel really bad about it is before I cut it open, I could shake it and hear the guts moving from front to back. That means it could easily have poor sealing abilities and leak dirty oil back into the engine.

The model I cut open was a PH3980

Thats strange that he would do that, he didn't use fram himself, but his father did and as far as I know he didn't have a problem saying that they were atleast good enough.

But as far as this video goes, I feel bad for the guy, he thought he'd been purchasing quality only to find out that it was garbage, FORTY years of his hard earned wages went towards making fram the "quality" company it is today. FRAM should be out of business, selling this trash, its almost sickening to see this.

I can't figure out how a company can make such good airfilters, lack concern for the quality of there oil filters.

I dunno if the FRAM guy ever was actually here but there is a Red Line guy here now! I should ask him his thoughts on filters =D

Sounds like another cost cutting measure. Somebody got a bonus for saving 0.0025 per filter. My grandpa would be really dissapointed. I remember as a kid in his garage looking at all the Fram filters on the shelf (Pre-Honeywell).

my grandfather is the same, I change the oil in his cars now since he is elderly. He still has some frams from his old Ford LTD and Chevy cars made by the old company. He questions me when I put AcDelco and Supertechs in his truck. It is sad that such a low quality filters is sold for so much. People see the orange can and legions of their products everywhere they figure and assume it is a quality product. Maybee 30 years ago it was a quality product but today it is low end, overprices, garbage. The Supertech or Ecore design is cheaper and better built than the frams. I know many will disagree with me but fiber end caps are not bad, use and cut open a Ecore. You will see how well they hold up, unlike fram filters.

Another thing, people here think that frams are fine and people bash them just to bash them. Wrong, frams in my experience are garbage. They fall apart during short OCI's. I am not saying that they ALL fall apart but they do more than I would like. Like I have said before I have seen at a number of them with after use defects, disconnected end caps, ADBV that was not connected to filter, Leaf spring disconnected prior to removing media from can, imploded media ( and they have "steel" center cage.) Frams should be priced lower than 3 dollars. But, some of us have no choice. I only have access to OCOD for my Jeep, unless I drive 35 miles away to a different wal-mart. I refuse to pay 7 dollars for a NAPA gold and I refuse to give money to pep-boys.

You can't get a Tough Guard or Extended Guard?
If I were stuck with only Extra Guards, I would get a car that used a cartridge filter since the FRAM Extra Guard cartridges are really nice!

That brings up an interesting point. Over the years there have been some pretty old Frams cut open and they were all about like the current ones.

Now I have posted data showing other brands current filters have less media than they had about 10 years ago. I have no data whatsoever on the quality of the media. So does anybody have information on a 20-30 year old Wix, ST, AC, Purolator, etc.?

Toughguards media is better and stronger than the extra but the problems with the ADBV and leaf spring + shoddy end caps still remain. I actually got my hands on a bunch of STs from the wm 35 miles away so I wont be seeing anymore frams.

I would love to see cuts of all the filters from 30 years ago. Would be very interesting and informative.

Here is a pic of the one I cut open that was flopping around inside and had the glued together media in lieu of the metal clamp in the video. Sorry for the poor circling job, its hard to do on a laptop touch pad.

So, I'm not a FRAM hater. I'm not concerned with fiber-end caps... I'm not concerned with the lower amount of pleats... It is what it is. An entry-level economy filter; however, there is something in this video that is a big concern to me. Such a shame that this can even happen.

Is it the money or the filter?
AFAIK, NAPA's filters are considered to be solidly built.
An ODoD will cost 4~5 dollars. What's another 2 bucks when it buys a quality item?

The Wix or Napa Gold for my Civic is also $7.xx. I can get an ST for $2.50 which is still good for 5K OCI. Until i know the Napa Gold or Wix can give me 3x the protection compared to the ST. I have no problem spending the money if it can filter out or work 3x better but so far i can't find anywhere that proves that it's 3x better.

My reasons exactly, I can get a ST wayy cheaper that is a quality filter and made in the US. NAPA gold is a good filter but its not 4 dollars better imo. Metal end caps and Silicone ADBV do not concern me for a OCI up to 7500 and I only do 5k. I got a few STs at a wally far away. I should be good for this year.

and superbusa that new fram it video is awsome. hehe.
