Another oil from Valvoline…

I know SDS is not a formula or true indicator of oil's characteristics, but nothing really stands out. Anything in the State Need-to-Know section look like a candidate for secret sauce?

I’ll reserve comment until I actually see product on the shelf . I still contend that a well maintained engine which has used decent synthetic SP D1 / Gen 3 rated oils at lower OCI’s with good oil filters and clean PCV valves probably don’t have a lot of engine clean up needed .

Do we have any reason to think this will help clean carbon off intake valves on GDI engines?

I see this product as useful if you purchase a vehicle with unknown service records. Another question would be whether or not it can free up piston rings.I will be looking forward to the obligatory Bitog C&P of an oil filter after 5,000 miles of use.

Pretty sure those are staged reviews by social media influencers, it even shows a stamp at the bottom of the review saying influenster.com. Probably take a few weeks before they show up retail.

Not to sound like a prick but how could an oil clean off intake valves that it never touches?

No problem, that's kind of what I thought.
In the Valvoline video though, it shows one of their employees examining a carboned up valve. Why would they do that unless they were trying to infer that this new oil would have some effect on it. I also got the impression that the tops of the pistons would be cleaned. I wouldn't expect much oil to be in that area?

Yes, they did have a big social media influencer push for this so you're probably correct.

This is just a guess on my part as this is so new but....

Given what we know so far, including price, i think the "secret sauce" is in the add pack but also the carrier oil for it(10%), which is some kind of ester. This could work out well as it would work slowly instead of the rush method. ...keep in mind that Valvoline is telling you to use it continuously over several OCI. It would also be convenient as most people out there change their oil once a year along with the filter, use one oil and don't want to deal with adding anything, especially since many products out there are (very) doubtful.

..basically the same as using 4 quarts of whatever shelf brand oil and 1 quart of a product that actually does work.

If it had, lets say, 20-30% ester in the base oil, it would cost a little over twice as much and not too many people out there would buy it.

Those are very good points. I think the breakthrough they are claiming comes likely from the additive side (just guessing). Sounds impressive for what it is.

As you also said, if you went the other/higher costly route using those high solvency group V base oils that are full SAPS, that would increase the cost significantly. Those oils are designed for extreme heavy-duty service and longer OCI. (HPL/Amsoil SS etc).
