Another blown H/K 2.4 engine

Expecting more than 125k out of a Kia or Hyundai is bonkers to me. Do some people get more? Sure. But don’t expect it.

I don't agree. I think any modern mainstream vehicle should get at least close to 200K miles without major repairs. Maybe repairs like door handles, ignition coils, alternator, CV axle, are totally fine, but you shouldn't have to replace the entire engine or transmission before that mileage. Assuming typical use and proper maintenance, of course. When it comes to luxury/high-end/exotic vehicles, it's a different story, but I'm talking about mainstream stuff like most Hyundai/Kia products.

Would more frequent oil changes (like every 5,000 miles) helped to prevent this, or is it just a design flaw that would have happened regardless of OCI?

As someone who seriously looked at H-K products in the past----the stuff that I read on the internet say that short oil intervals would only make it less bad as there are structural issues w/the design of those older engines.

However all the interesting stuff is in Korean, so if anyone is fluent tell us what you find!

Yeah, from what I've heard, maybe 10% of the failures can be attributed to poor maintenance while 90% are just junk parts/design/manufacturing.

I work at an auto parts store... many customers have voluntarily told me they're on their 2nd engine on their newer HyunKia. People talk about their stuff and love to share what they think of their vehicle (for some reason, tbh most of the time I couldn't care less)... The latest one I can remember off the top of my head was a guy with a Kia Soul. He came in for a check engine light freaking out that his replacement engine was bad. He had paid to put a used engine in after owning the car for just a few years (I guess he either didn't know about the engine replacement warranty, I asked him if he tried contacting the company and he said he just figured he was out of powertrain warranty and didn't bother trying to get them to replaceme it) anyway just turned out to be a bad coil which was swapped in the parking lot and he was sooooo happy because he was sure the engine was going to go boom again. That car had less than 100K miles on it.

I owned a 1986 Hyundai Excel that I paid $600 for in 1990 (with low miles and needing a new M/T) as a ghetto car for working in ‘disadvantaged’ areas of NYC.

PS: Early in this post I mentioned the vandalization of our cars by the locals in the Bronx….eventually we chipped in and had a fence installed and one night the locals took a stolen car up to the street behind our fenced in lot (which was uphill from our parking lot) and put a cinder block on the gas pedal and sent it flying into the fence. The fence came down on several cars causing damage to them….those were crazy times when ‘crackheads’ were everywhere in the Bronx.

So you're the person I got that copy of Metallica's Kill 'Em All on cassette tape from.
Thanks man, I still listen to it today. ;)

Don't mess with NYC.
