I like how thick this 30 weight oil is but didn’t know if the higher zinc and phosphorus content is counter productive for a modern push rod engine. I tow an 8,000 camper in the Rocky Mountains and wanted a motor oil with extra protection. Ford “recommends” 5-30 for most situations and 0w-30 for
Temps south of -4 and over 5,000 elevation or something like that.

You will be fine. ZDDP is not enough to be a worry, unless maybe the engine consumes quite a bit of oil

Consumption isn’t an issue but I know an excessive amount of zinc is also bad for wear?

Would the 10w be an issue for a motor that’s recommended to run 5w? I wouldn’t run 10w if it its super cold.

I ask these questions that may appear simple because I don’t want to play FAFO with a newer motor.

If you want my opinion just 15w-40 it. 4.1 hths with low vii and high thermal stability. As for which one pretty much any, I use many 15w-40's in my 5w-30 calling ohv v8's and they love it. Silent at hot idle with little to no consumption anymore. Mobil delvac extreme 15w-40 is top notch. Could also use M1 esp 5w-40 for a bit more which is also great. You can also use any euro rated 0/5w-40. I use that in my 6.2 escalade since it's a bit thinner than 15w-40 but still thicker. Also silent at hot idle now to where I can now hear the di pump instead of the valvetrain and it no longer burns a drop.

Too much ZDDP can cause corrosive wear, but Z-Rod doesn't have nearly enough to cause it. The Amsoil Dominator 10W-30 I use has somewhat more ZDDP than Z-Rod. VP makes a race oil with 2200ppm of ZDDP. Now that's a lot.

Do the soot additives in diesel oil have any negative effect on a gas engine?

None, in fact it's good to have them and there's no downside to having them though they weren't there for cost reasons since soot in gas engines wasn't a real thing. An old carb or port injected gas engine had no need for them. But many hdeo's are dual rated anyways and also many gasoline oils like euro oils are dual rated for light duty diesels so those gasoline engines run the same oil their diesel brother does and vice versa. Remember these modern gasoline engines are like diesels in the way of soot control because of gdi and It's good to have soot additives in a gas engine. Port injected engines still had soot in the oil just far less than a di engine today, not enough to merit the soot control additives.

Also recall from the Amsoil literature:

APPLICATIONS Use Z-ROD Synthetic Motor Oil in engines requiring either 10W30, 10W-40 or 20W-50 motor oil. Z-ROD Synthetic Motor Oil meets API SL and earlier specifications, allowing for increased levels of anti-wear additives. ZDDP levels in Z-ROD Synthetic Motor Oil exceed the limits of API SM and newer specifications.

SERVICE LIFE "Because engines in classic cars, hot rods and other performance vehicles are generally modified, a universal oil drain interval recommendation for these applications cannot be given. Responsibility for determining the drain interval duration rests with the owner. As a general service guideline, the maximum drain interval for Z-ROD Synthetic Motor Oil should not exceed 5,000 miles or two years, whichever comes first."

I could care less about the cats, my truck isn’t using any noticeable oil. I just wanted
They don't. Most are dual rated, but not sure you need a 15W-40, maybe a 5W-40, but even then. Your 10W-30 idea seemed pretty good in the first place.

Is the Amosil 5w-30 HDEO SS dual rated ?

Not sure if it should or shouldn't be used in newer vehicles.

We've been using the 10W-30 Z-Rod Oil (w/K&N HP-6002 filter) in our '78 Camaro with a mild SBC 385 stroker for 10 or so years. It has a hydraulic flat tappet cam, so I wanted the extra ZDDP. When we swap it to a hydraulic roller cam, we'll just probably stick with it.

Good luck, NYH.

When ours was rebuilt at work at a ford dealership, ford told use to run higher zinc oils in them. Run the oil and pray for the best, don't run long drain intervals as well, 5k max. Good luck
