With the issues that have popped up with the valve train on the Ford 7.3 gas would running a non api certified oil that carries like 1,200 ppm phosphorus and 1,300+ ppm zinc be a good idea? Is it too much ZDDP? Thinking about running Royal purple hps 5w-30 since it has A LOT of ZDDP in it. I’m not worried about warranty issues (not yet)

What oil weight do they recommend?

No, it's a part QC issue, not a lack of AW additives issue.

Understandable, but would the additional ZDDP hurt at all?
No, I run the Euro full-SAPS additive package in both vehicles because I want the higher levels of AW additives myself, but if I had a 2011-2017 HEMI, I wouldn't expect it to have any impact on whether I lose a lifter or not if I've got a defective one in there (same QC issue as Ford).

I think HPS would be fine. If you have a claim. They take it apart, it's clean and they fix it. Now, if it's sludged up and it fails, they could give you a hard time. Run it, heck if you are feeling froggy, run a 0w40 with high zddp. I don't think you'll have problems. Keep it changed at 5k intervals and run it.

I'm not a fan of Walmart-type full saps oils for TGDIs. I'll just watch nearby when the times are necessary for some BITOGERs to get all that carbon / soot out of the engine periodically.

For an engine like the big 7.3, I'll let others here chime-in on the benefits of full saps & big block engines.

Royal Purple HPS is not even at Walmart so I have no idea what you are talking about.

You can’t get royal purple HPS at Walmart or even automakers stores. You can only get the royal purple api stuff at Walmart

Lake speed had a video about adding additional zinc like rislone zinc additive and said 3,600 ppm of zinc added to motor oil could damage a camshaft in 5 minutes, didn’t know if a formulated high zinc oil like royal purple HPS that has like maybe 1,400 ppm of zinc could damage an engine over time.

Royal purple HPS 5w30 can be used on diesels too. Not sure if it’s a good idea for my 7.3 gas. On paper with the VOA I’ve seen it looks stout but im concerned the high ZDDP could be counter productive

On a side note I went to two different Walmarts and neither of them had the supertech advanced full synthetic 5w-30 nor did they have pennzoil ultra platinum 5w30. I was annoyed

As long as it’s not burning oil (contaminating catalytic converters), I don’t see how it can hurt anything. Though, given Ford’s flimsy parts, not sure it would help either… 1400 Zn really isn’t that high, diesel HDEO was that high in the old pre-DPF days.

fully formulated oil is definitely better than anything a garage tribologist can come up with. i would just stick with either PUP, Valvoline EP HM 5w-30, M1 ep hm 5w-30, m1 0w-40.

"All things being equal".....

The newer SP rating, with a lower detergent package that "competes less" with the ZDDP, should yield higher anti wear characteristics.

Is the above statement kind of true @Molekule ?

I have found Royal Purple HPS to be excellent oil in the past.

Is hps an extended drain oil? A local shop was selling the 5w20 for a decent price but I’m not familiar with it

I would say that it depends on your definition of extended drain interval. Most drive in severe conditions and would not qualify for extended drain anyway.

I buy it 5 gallon pale, I run it in my two supercharged mod motors for the higher level of zddp that you talk about. Getting it by the 5 gal jug makes it way less expensive.

you can get Royal Purple HPS at Summit racing on line , or just use the pcmo found at wall mart, its a fine oil, or the Valvoline EP is another good oil,,or even consider Schaeffer's 9000 5w-30.

My version of extended would be 10k or shortly before, which is my OLM. I just recently switched to Schaeffers and hpl which I’ll run the full length. Local shop had cases of 5-20 for $60 just to get rid of it. Seems like a good price compared to Amazon selling 6qts for that price.
