I have a 2001 Road King Classic with 18,500 miles. Yesterday took my bike in to a local wrench to get it inspected and replace the outer primary seal that was leaking. Since it was leaking, I hadn't changed the primary oil for 2+ years only added a bit of fluid.
I use Amsoil 20W50(4qts) in the crankcase, 10W40(1qt) in the primary and Severe Gear 75W90(22oz) in the transmission. I was amazed how clean the primary was inside after not changing it out for 6000 miles or so and 2+ years. Clutch looked like new and inside of the case was spotless. Primary chain was bright and clean also.
I think I'll start doing the transmission and primary every other year and the crankcase every year now. I have had great luck with all the Amsoil products. Anyone else use my combination?
Pete

I have a few friends that use that combo and really like it. Most though just run the 20w-50 in all three sumps. They don't like to keep it simple with one weight of oil on hand.

Amsoil claims you can go twice the mfgrs recommended oci's with their oil. Harley recommends 5k oci's, so at the rate your packing on the miles about 1600 a year, you should be able to go almost 10 years with Amsoil between changes. Why keep changing clean oil?.,,

I guess just piece of mind. They also say or 1 year. I figure for about $50 to 60 bucks with Amsoil filter its overkill but now I'll just do the crankcase every year and the other 2 every other year. Now if I could get my rear Dunlop to last more than 6000-7000 miles!

I don't mean to be a wise guy, so don't get me wrong, however,

When are you going to start riding that bike? 18,500 miles on an 11 year old bike! 6000 miles in 2+ years!

Start riding and leave the car at home. Take long trips. Did I say, leave the car at home?

BTW, I rode for 51 years and before my health went bad, and before I sold my last bike, I went all over the country BY BIKE, Went to all the big national rallies. Averaged two NY-FL round trips a year. Averaged at least one Western round trip a year, to either NM, AZ, CA, CO, MT, etc. This is not even counting the two motorcycle trips I took through Europe.

Ride it, don't keep it looking good in the garage.

Sorry. Just wish my health was good again, so I could do it all over.

I do agree about the comments to ride it but I'm in the same boat and understand that its not always easy to ride as often as you like.

I currently have a large stash of VP Racing 15W-50 oil but prior to that I've run either Amsoil or Redline in the engine. I've run 75W-90 Amsoil in the trans in the past and have been running Amsoil 75W-110 for a while now. I've tried just about everything in the primary and have been using Amsoil 10w30 for the last couple of changes and will likely continue. I run engine oil for a year and primary and transmission fluid for two years. The fluids have always come out nice and clean once the break-in period was over.
