Aluminum flecks in oil filter

@ZeeOSix

Why do I get the feeling that you know that his engine does not have a simple "valve cover" and the "valve cover" is actually the cam caps/bridge/"valve cover"

Why do I get a feeling I've been trolled??

Wow, that's a ridiculous design ... who would do such a thing? Not trolled, except maybe by VW. 😬

Even though the valve cover acts as the cam caps etc, what's so special and involved to remove it?

That's horrible. Only other time I'd start it is to pull it up on ramps and tear it apart. Wouldn't keep running it like that unless you want 0 compression and a big bill for a head replacement.
It's made that noise at start up only for ~5 mos. intermittently. Sounds more interesting at fast idle/cold start. I've driven it over that time hard/no issues. I'll be chatting with the shop when I get back in town next week now that I have a video a bit easier to explain it.

Welcome to many overhead cam 4 bangers...the days of "dummy" valve covers is long gone. The issue simply is all the crap you have to move etc. to do it honestly. I'm not planning on pulling anything in my garage, I'll be chatting with my shop now that I have a video and seeing what they want to do.

Do you have another vehicle you can drive in the meantime? I’m not sure I’d want to drive it like that.
I've been driving it (HARD!) like that for 5 mos. It's intermittent and right now, I'm just carrying on. Hasn't made a peep all day and just got back from some errands. I do have my Passat W8 that I also drive. This is the first time I've heard this in months.

It would be less work to change out the chain/tensioner/guides.

At that point, he might as well do the timing chains and that exhaust cam @tigeis so in love with.

Agreed - if they pull the cover and that's the issue may as well do chains and MK6 GLI cam for 0.00000456 (repeating) more mm of exhaust lift for all the powwwaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!

TiGeo....let us know the diagnosis. I have recommended the sportswagen as a vehicle to my older sister. She is currently shopping for and driving them right now.....as we speak. Anything happens in the future it will no doubt be my fault.

Unlike many posting in this thread, I have a vested interest in this issue. She is mean.
You recommended a EA888? Glutton for punishment, aren't you? :ROFLMAO:

The cams are most likely sitting right on the aluminum journal bearings milled in the head. Cam bearings do no have bearing inserts like crank and rod big end bearings do.

Bad news is the upper/lower pieces are sold as a matched set.

You are like the bipolar child of BiTog.

You: gotta change oil with LM/HPL, quality filters. Gotta install AP racing brakes, quality suspension, is38 turbo, quality tune.....clean he hell out of the car.

Also you: (something rattles in the engine) Imma just send it.

Hopefully we don't get the "I SENT IT TOO HARD" video on your channel.

That NEVER happens if you're careful. I have nightmares of it to this day.

Thank you for triggering that memory.
Yeah, I don't plan on doing it again. Just the idea of it makes my skin crawl.

edit: I have a theory that it might be easier to reinstall the cam cover without the solenoids in place. Then move the sliders after the cover is back-on since the cover has "limiters" that prevent them from sliding too far. But I hope to never find out because I kinda don't want to do another one.

HAHAAHAHAHAH

It's not really crazy, if something was that serious I would have known by now. It will get sorted here this month. I figure the 41+ runs down the drags in the last few mos. would have more than destroyed it if this was a "teetering on the edge of doom" type deal plus it's sporadic and with it on cold/hot starts only, it has to be oil-pressure related timing chain tensioner...but we will see and you'll hear it first here on the World Famous BITOG!
