I just drained the oil, only pulled 2 quarts and even worse gas milage (24.6 this tank). I have experienced this before, after certain mileage on the oil it just burns off like crazy. I had forgotten it does this.

should I even bother with the TBN this time? oil was black as I've ever seen

edit: and for anyone else that thinks I can't 'tell', I can also hear how the engine is running more smoothly on the newer oil

Wait, you mean that you were running your engine with only two quarts in the sump?

Seriously?

Can't find the dispstick? Too cold to open the hood? Don't bother checking?

I don't think we are the dummies here...

There's an expression for this sort of thing.

Obviously OP checks his oil but it started rapidly burning off later on in the OCI. A lot of us don't check the oil constantly because we know our cars don't consume it.

Fuel dilution from poor running is beating up your oil, basically. At some point in the OCI, the oil's flash point drops enough that you start burning oil.

Wouldn't be shocked if the volatized oil is messing with your combustion and thereby affecting your fuel economy.

I can't be bothered to check as it shouldn't drop from 4.75q to 2q in 3000 miles

definitely your fault

yeah. why did it just disappear practically overnight? it's dropped like a rock like this before, but it's also possible I've done something to the engine given how hard I drive it. I have once noticed 'white' exhaust when I floored it (*it was also cold out*), and last time I got out of it at the gas station there was some exhaust plumes that seemed to persist for a bit longer (also very cold out) than I'm used to. That said, I definitely didn't smell oil, I was about 2 feet from the cloud; I think I would have smelled it had it been oil burning.

You know you have an oil consumption issue, and you can't be bothered to check the oil level in 3000 miles, and it is HIS fault?

MalfunctionProne, is that you?

so I haven't 'killed' the engine?

I feel like you're reasoning backwards, as my first thought would definitely be "I toasted something" if this hadn't happened consistently before on Castrol Edge Synthetic (not Syntec). Generally, as soon as it gets low enough to need to add a quart, I'm about to start burning it. I've added a quart in the past, and that usually tides me over for 700-1000 miles and then that starts disappearing too.

new idea: if I'm going to just burn off the old [censored], could I just keep adding oil? Let's get a really high quality oil filter and try it.

I have enough money (oil?) to burn that I'm interested in trying it. A replacement engine would run $1700. What's the labor?

actually on second thought, it's too annoying to have to top up one quart at a time multiple times. I'll just change it next time it's too low on the dip stick

no, this has happened before and used oil analysis said it was wearing very well for the mileage. Last UOA at least. I'll post back when I get results for this one

You need to step away from the crack pipe. The white smoke you seen was from when you exhaled. The oil you smelled was residue from the pipe.

^^^^ I just spit a mouthful of tea all over the screen after reading that one

Certain years of the Scion tc (including the 08) are known oil burners. One really has to keep on top of the levels if you want to keep them on the road.

If you were using Castrol you could use only 1 quart.
