Coming back from lunch a guy in a Red Smart car was pulling out of a parking lot. I was going North @ 35mph or so and he was facing West and wanting to make a left(south).

He ASSUMED that I was going to pull into the driveway where he was. I was not going to pull into that parking lot and I did not have my right signal on.

I was continuing past the entrance/exit to the parking lot 3 more blocks to get back to work.

Well he pulled out and made his left as I was almost to the driveway. I locked em up and was able to squeeze between his rear end and the curb.

This really put me in a foul mood for a while and my heart was racing. Now that I'm home safe I wonder what he was thinking when all he saw was a Bricknose F250 and that "Diesel" badge heading towards him.

He was probably hoping the super frame in that smart car really worked, because he was going to test it, lol.

I've seen people do it on purpose. Wait until you are close then pull out and slooowwwwly accelerate. I can imagine them saying " i'm saving the world in my prius, you will just have to wait for me!!!"

When I teach someone to drive one of the things I do is ask them what are the two directions you can turn a vehicle? They respond right and left. And I say NO, from now on think Right and " I do not have the right of way". And from then on when I give directions to them I tell them to make a right, or to make a I do not have the right of way.

It is corney I know, and sometimes they get tired of hearing it, but from then on they think twice before making a left turn.

It would be interesting to find out the weight of both vehicles and the amount of change of speed your F250 would have undergone (if it was at idle and going 35 MPH).

Probably would have slowed you down to 34 MPH.

Not at all. I watched a program recently about UPS. They plan all their delivery routes using only right turns where ever possible.

Turn left from a parking lot into a busy street is the most dangerous move a driver can make. You have to look for traffic on both left and right and left and right quickly and only start to move when both directions are clear.

I wouldn't disregard safety as a secondary factor but UPS does this for efficiency (as mentioned in that same documentary

Heck...I plan my errand-running route to make mostly right turns! But it's more a time consideration with heavy traffic around here...I keep my sanity better (and don't hit that frustration level where I take more risk) if I can just turn right, pull out and be on my way...

i had to weigh it for the dmv when i registered it. truck weighs #6500lbs with hardly any fuel and no driver.

I have a pretty heavy bumper on my Jeep - it's also pretty thick. I'm hoping I never have to use it, but I've come close in parking lots.

Last weekend I saw a wreck in a parking lot where my jeep wouldn't have got a scratch.

as a matter of fact, someone drove into my Jeep trying to pull into a parking spot. Her hood, fender, bumper and head light were destroyed. It just knocked some mud off of the bumper.

Unfortunately, it often turns into "pull out in front of oncoming vehicles, block all traffic from the left, wait until the right is clear, then wave at all the irritated folks who had to stop for you when you didn't have the right of way.".
