AAP Filters and Purolator The SAME FILTER

The strings seem to be on old Puro PP filters....

I've cut open two of my own and neither had a string on them...also the Motorcraft filters don't have strings either...

Pete:

If a filter has less media (of the same type) then the flow rate per unit area must be higher for a given application. The faster flow and subsequently higher pressure drop must reduce the efficiency at least a little, as more dirt gets pushed through. Maybe it's so small that it doesn't matter much, but I'd bet it's there.

My only concern with many filters is that the AAP filter seems to be larger for my toyota 4386 compared to a ST 4967, almost an inch more of filtration ability. Many use fram on this board. I guess to each there own...

Larger in what way? Taller, diameter, both?

If the AAP is longer than the ST, more than likely is is because of the e-core bypass design, they tend to be shorter but with the same height element.

do these AAP's have an anti-drainback valve? Just worried about cold starts on the 2001 Civic.
They don't make them for my Galant and I'll keep running a MC on the F150.
Thanks.

I took another look at the case of AAP filters I bought last week. On the threaded end of the can, there is some sort of metal overlay glued on with what looks like latex sealant/caulk. It looks like there was a problem with whatever dispensed it. On some of the filters it had overflowed and formed hanging drips inside the filter, even on the clean side, and they were not stuck very tightly. Even the threads were coated with this stuff. I don't want those 1/4" long dried boogers passing through my engine.

The filters went back to AAP today, and I'm going to order some WIX/NAPA filters from Bryan at FleetFilter instead.

The supertech doesn't make a 4386 filter for my camry, they only carry a 4967 which is about an inch smaller in length, both filter are the same width. This is the reason that I am going to make the switch to the aap filter. I'll be checking my filters for any problems with the quality of them. I'll exchange them for the regular Purolator pp if there are any problems.

None of mine have ever had anything like that. Bad batch I'd have to say.

I've never seen it this bad before either. Most filters are constructed such that the sheet metal part of the base plate doesn't extend inward too much past the gasket. It's an open ring. I have seen a small amount of sealant squeeze-out on some Champion Labs filters, but nothing much. It is like a little fillet just inside of the gasket, it's stuck tight, and is entirely on the dirty side of the media.

Purolator filters have their sheet metal part pretty much cover the entire thick base plate, with the holes of the two parts lining up. Any sealant that squeezes out can drip right into the filter and might not be that visible from the outside. It has me concerned. At least this batch of Purolator filters didn't have metal shavings clinging to the threads, like the last ones I bought.

I ordered a case of WIX from FleetFilter. It cost me a few dollars more and I am a true tightwad. The Beta ratios for the WIX filters I ordered were not overly spectacular I'm fairly confident that I won't find any other problems with them.
