96 Honda Accord 130k

Just bought a 98 Accord 2.3L with 63,000 miles on it. Commute car, all highway miles 40 miles round trip 5 days a week in NJ. I have a heavy foot and want to the car to last (of course) while getting the most out of it. What I would like to know is, do I have to stay with the dino (that's in there now) or is it too late to switch to a syn? Its my first Honda and any advice would be helpful.
Thanks!

Amazine,

I'd do some short OCI's and get the engine cleaned out using 5W30 dino SM rated. Maybe even substitute a quart of Marvel Mystery oil for a quart of oil on the first oil change.

Change it out at 1500 miles and do another oil change at 1500 miles. One more about 2000 miles later and I'd switch to either a blend or full synthetic.

I would not start cranking off 7,000 mile OCI's until I had an UOA at about 5,000 miles and see what the lab said.

Even though Honda is about the best engine out there for longevity, I would take the best care I could out of it. You never know if you might have to drive the thing until it completely fell apart. If you will take care of the engine, it will do that.

I've got a 2005 EX-L 4 cyl that has about 7500 miles on it and has about 3,000 miled on the Mobil 1 that is in it. I am going to change it out at 8,000 miles and get a sample for an UOA and pour Mobil 1 back in. I know I could go longer, but I don't want to push it without knowing.

I would differ a bit from thooks. 63K miles is not much at all on a Honda engine. Unless you have some problems you haven't mentioned, assuming the engine is in good condition, no reason not to run a good quality 5W-30, either dino or synthetic will be fine. We have run dino in all of the Hondas in our family going back many years. With highway driving, you might try a 5,000 mile interval and see what the UOA shows you. Lube Control will help extend the interval, we use it in several Accords in the family. Dinos such as Pennzoil, Exxon Superflo, Havoline, blends such as Schaeffers, have shown excllent UOAs, such that you might not see the need to pay the higher cost of the full synthetics. Check out the UOA section here for results on Hondas of your car's generation.

STS,

No argument about the Honda engine, but he does not tell us that he knows the service history.

No, 63K miles is not much on a Honda engine, if it has been taken care of.

The car is 7-8 years old. That is about 8,000 miles a year, meaning either it's sat a good bit or had mainly short trips. If the OCI's were longer than 4,000 miles, I'd say it needs some attention regarding cleaning the engine out as best as possible.

$40 in some short oil changes and some MMO might get him a few more miles down the road, might not. But it's cheap while it's young and over the long haul.

He says he drives 40 miles a day. I'm assuming (2) 20-mile intervals, thereby qualifying for a 7-10K mile OCI on Synthetic, if the UOA comes back good. He also says he likes to drive it hard. I'd definitely run synthetic and probably shorten the OCI to less than 7,000.
