One more car to ask about!

I purchased this car with 210k on the clock and despite its generally good health I opted to go ahead and replace the rings and bearings while I had it partially torn apart. Prior to the rebuild I changed the oil once using castrol synthetic blend and a PL24457 filter.

This car will be used mostly for Auto-x, track days, and back road fun-- but won't be seeing what I would consider enough of a level of abuse to warrant using redline oil in the motor.

I am unsure of the recommended oil for this motor(KA24DE) but i'm assuming it is 5W-30 or 40.

What do you recommend for the post-rebuild break in and longer term use- Both for the oil and OCI?

ps- Thanks for your recommendations on the MTL for this car a while back, the MTL/MT90 mix will be going in the trans as soon as its back on the road.

Should've swapped a SR20 in there.

I used to have a KA24DE in my Altima and it recommended 5W-30 for colder temps and 10W-30 for summer temps. When I had mine, I drove it very hard and it was subject to a lot of short trips. I used Valvoline conventional (either 5W-30 or 10W-30) in it until the time I sold it. Never had any issues related to that motor, even after all of my abuse.

I plan to go full synth in this thing, but I haven't read up on recommendations for break in or anything.

I know the previous owner probably did a relatively OK job of keeping up with oci's, he had it for something like 7 years too. The bearings looked GREAT and it was getting 190 compression w/ only 1-2 deviation across the board. Verryy pleased with it, but wile it was easy to do went ahead and replaced the wear parts.

Not bad for a $500 thrasher!

Any rust on it? If not, that's a heck of a deal. Wish I knew what to tell you about synthetic but I never ran any synthetic in mine. I've ran plenty in my Integra but it's an entirely different engine. The KA24 being a torque-y truck-based motor whereas mine's a high-revving all aluminum Honda engine...

For what it's worth, I drive my Integra hard and I've been using Castrol Edge for the past few oil changes. It runs very quiet and smooth and seems to be holding up fine. I'll get it analyzed when I hit 5k miles. Also, that's interesting about the oil filter... I thought those used the 14610. Guess the older ones were different.

No rust, just some fairly light body damage and a ratty interior. Bought it just as a beater/thrasher and to race eventually. Ratty interior is gone and I don't care about the dent!

Anyone else? I'm considering the ubiquitous M1 and keep using the P1. Is that okay for break in as well?

Sorry to be a bit of a jerk, but I want to bring this back up to the top.

I'm hearing conflicting stuff on what to use for break in on this rebuild.

I have this motor in my truck. I was just wondering the other day if I should switch to 10w30 for the summer instead of the recommended 5w30 which covers all temps.

^^Use this oil. If that`s the same motor that`s in the 4 cyl Altimas,it`ll run forever on that stuff. My friend has a 1998 Altima 4 cyl and she`s in the 300,000 mile range and uses nothing buy PYB 10W30 and an ocod oil filter. She lived in Alaska and now back in Texas,so that oil will work perfectly. She also has a lead foot and usually cruises 80-90mph everytime she`s on the highway. Engine runs like brand new,has no sludge, and uses no oil. 3000 mile oci`s.

I would just use a cheap dino for break in.

I miss my 240's. I had a few but I did SR swaps on them. It is a very fun car with decent suspension mods. A good set of coilovers and some swaybars will take care of that s13 understeer.

It is indeed the same motor, the KA24DE.

after the break in either Rotella T6, GC or PU. The tensioners rely on oil pressure and they seem to get gummed up with conventional. Ditch the upper chain guides, Knock sensor and EGR/AIV.
