I have often approached that with my 02 Ecotec. Most of the miles it sees is my wife driving 30 miles each way to work on open 2 lane roads, some in town and highway trips. It has seen nothing but Pennzoil conventional since I dumped the factory fill. I have changed the oil every 3 months. I had a Blackstone on the December change, and it looked very good except for the TBN.
7500 on dino?

A guy I know used to drive 90,00 miles a year and put would buy cars for $200 and drive them until the wheels fell off. I think that specific car (Geo Metro) got one oil change ever. Do you think it was synthetic? I don't think so.
mjoeking - You seem to be the ideal candidate for a full synthetic oil. With your fast racking up of miles, you would not have to change the oil as often, and could actually save $ overall with smart purchases.
Every Saturn 1.9L engine I have worked on was heavily varnished even with 3000 miles oil changes.

Do it. You are also adding fresh oil to the sump now and again. You'll be fine for that reason alone. I go 5k on my SL2 without breaking a sweat. I change it out sometime after 5k, but I've added a couple quarts so I'm really not worried.
I usually change the oil every 6,000 to 8,000 miles on my '96 SL2 and I have not had any sludge or deposit problems after nearly 144,000 miles. And yes, I used conventional oil. When I replaced the valve cover gasket, there was no heavy varnish buildup.
With that use and consumption, I'd stop actually 'changing the oil' - use an inexpensive 10w30, top it off as needed, change the filter every six months, and just keep going.

I'd go with MaxLife 10w30 or even 10W-40. It has a nice additive package and a fairly high TBN. You could extend the OCI with this stuff, then when you get towards the end, just top it off with whatever oil's cheapest or on sale...
The Rotella 10w30 syn blend or 15w40 might not be a bad idea for summer, either.
