7500 on dino?

Hey all, got a Saturn 1.9 DOHC and I'm putting 1500 miles a week on it (300 daily). I use name brand conventional and have been changing at the factory 'non-severe' duty schedule of 6000 miles, which is every month.

I burn about a pint every 1000-1500 miles. I'm not going to get an analysis done and the oil never gets near pitch, its always medium to dark amber.

Would I be risking anything by putting another week on each fill? Its not going to break the bank either way, but it would be sorta cool to go a little further.

Wow 78,000 miles a year? If you weren't burning 1 qt/3k miles or less, I'd say AMSOIL Signature Series or Mobil 1 Extended Performance and go 15k miles. I wouldn't go 7500 on dino, personally. Your choice though

I'd go with a long oci synthetic such as Edge, Mobil 1 Extended Performance, GC.

Your usage is perfect for long-drain synthetic intervals. Would be cooler, AND save you money.

Edit: Oh, missed the part about it burning that much. If you're burning a quart every 10 days then it seems like whatever oil is left will never see that much oxidation. Just keep it topped up at all times and use quality (oversized if available) filters and seems like you should be able to go 7.5k.

I wouldn't use syn with any car thats burning oil like that. it wont fix your saturns issue as it seem they have consumption issues anyway. Just dino IMO, no sense in adding qt after qt of syn.

I would have zero problems going 7500 on dino with all those highway miles.

I'm no expert but I would feel comfortable enough to go another 1500 miles (which for you is only another week). Say you go 1500 miles and have to add a pint (which is 1/2 quart). When you change it at 6000 miles you've added 2 quarts. I think your engine holds 4 quarts. So when you do your oil change, 50% of it is "newer" oil which hasn't seen the full 6000 miles. If you burn a pint every 1000 miles that means at 6000 miles you've added 3 quarts so 75% of is now new oil and only 25% of it has seen the full 6000 miles. My 2 cents is that going to 7500 is no biggie - esp. at the rate you're burning through oil. I think going synthetic for you would just mean burning a lot of money...

Well, I didn't realize at first those are probably all highway, I still wouldn't feel completely comfortable with that many miles, but maybe Havoline DS would be a good choice. It's a good oil, it's cheap. By the way, what kind of gas mileage you getting with that? Seems like the Chevy Cruze might be a good idea for a new car, with 40+mpg highway.

Depending on how fast he's driving should be around 32-35mpg or so. No real need to get a new car.

this would be a fun car to experiment on different wgts of oil, like 15w40 or just use a straight wt for summer,like 4o wt and a qt of lucas oil stabilizer. why not, o yea,,dont forget the mmo

Maybe try Maxlife 10w30 or other High Mileage oil to see if that helps. If not go back to putting in the cheapest stuff you can buy.

If it's 7500 mostly highway miles and using a good name brand oil like Mobil clean 5000 sure i'd go with it.

Oh yeah.. with that milage and consumption, I'd go 7,500 no problem. Maybe even a little longer.

I do 7,500 on a 2.4L "Twin-Cam" Malibu that see's 70 miles/day and a extra quart in about 3k miles. Oil consumption has actually been decreasing since I switched from 3k OCI's to 7.5...

I'd have no problem doing even longer changes then that. 10,000 would likely be A-OK with that kind of service. Are you doing delivery or courier service?

With synthetic, 10,000 would be a piece of cake.

In warm weather, you and the Saturn would be perfect candidates for a 15w40 HDEO.
Might even help clean things up, and would likely reduce consumption.
Saturns, from what I have read, can run forever with fairly high consumption, though.
WRT miles, current GM OLMs will give more than 10K on any oil for the type of driving you must be doing, so you could surely go another week.
With a HDEO, you could probably exceed 10K on a change, particularly since you will be adding make-up oil.

Motorcraft FL-400S and Mobil 1 M1-209 are bigger than the OEM Saturn filter and fit (I use them in both of mine). Oh, the STP 3600 filter works, too (I'm using one during my Auto-Rx(!) treatment).
