5w20 visc at 100C 9.0
5w30 11.9
10w30 11.4
10w40 15.1
Obviously whatever the second number is you are going to have a similar visc at operating temp. Point being... There is a large difference in viscosity and it makes a large difference in your engine. Your larger number will protect you on long trip or when hauling, but just like anything it comes at a price. Your oil will be 3 plus points less viscous. So it is a good idea to think about it before anyone increases flow restriction by 33%. Less protection at start up, probably up to 2 mpg less, less of a flo to combat sludge, etc. Maybe it will work fine in this application, but it is not working in the hemi population. yes, some 4 gen Rams with Hemi are doing fine with 5w30, but MANY are developing ticks. So at least consider both sides, I believe that is what the OP is asking.
