I would trust the owners manual that came with the truck...

However Ford changed the spec from what the manual says, so they pretty much said its outdated. Besides, oil's have changed a lot since 1993.

But did Ford change the spec to include 1993?

Is there a link to this information/spec change?

Since I don't see the OP's engine listed, he's conducting an experiment. Definitely let us know how its doing with this oil.

I don't drive it enough miles to justify the expense of the Amsoil SSO 0w30 oil.

Just drove the truck and I have to say it felt like there was more power epically going on the freeway on ramps. Could be the lower visc or just the fact its new oil, but I like it!

It's fun to try new things I'll admit...well, at least those that one has some interest in doing anyway. Have fun and enjoy the OCI.

Take care and let us know how things are in 50k miles.

I don't think I'll have this truck in 50K miles.

I experienced more pep also - when I switched to 5W-20 in my S-10 4.3 six cylinder. But when I drained it yesterday at 5K, the magnetic oil drain plug was loaded with metal shavings -- first time ever for that - at almost 100K. This vehicle has seen nothing but name brand Group III synthetic -- changed every 5-6K.

After looking at prior oil change records, this was not Quaker State oil. It was old SL 5W-20 Pennzoil synthetic (old bottle - pre Platinum).

So I'm not sure if the switch to thin oil - or the subpar older Pennzoil synthetic was to blame. I replaced it with a batch of leftovers.... three qts Syntec 5W-20 and two qts 5w30 Pennzoil Platinum Group V stuff. I'm already anxiously awaiting the oil drain plug results in five more Ks. Won;t be able to sleep until spring.

For what purpose?

The oil needed changing and 0W-20 is spec'd for my application.

Hmmm, I checked 93 V8 f150 and Mustang. Looks like piston to cylinder wall clearance wasn't as close as current models are. Ford didn't back-spec Mustang for 5w-20. Could be testing didn't show increased consumption in truck engines because they're slower revving.

This back-specing just shows Ford feels lighter oil extends engine life in cold climates, and lighter oil is durable enough for higher temps in hot climates too.

If the 0w-20 is borderline 30wt, then that sounds perfect.
