hi eneryone,
I just bought a new to me used 2002 f150 I have never been a ford man but wanted to try it anyway. The truck is a xl extended cab with a 4,6 v8 5 speed 4x4 has 170000 miles.I think the owner put Pennzoil reg.oil I would like to change to syn oil I put a little mmo in it.I will be changing oil soon what oil is going to be the best for my 4.6?

Thanks for your input
.

i would get a hm oil, synthetic hm oils are available maxlife synthetic hm oil a top choice, mobil 1 is great also
for the filter i would choose fram tough guard or motorcraft
these are my opinions i could be wrong

With a Ford, when in doubt default to Motorcraft. If you want to go full synthetic then M1, PP, QSUD, Castrol, Kendall, Havoline, etc, will all treat your engine just fine.

If you wanted to HM, then MaxLife or M1 HM are the two synthetic choices that people recommend. PP HM is still too new, and is probably a very good product but is difficult to find at a decent price.

I'd skip the MMO and just go High Mileage oil and a Motorcraft filter on 5k OCI's. Maybe after a couple changes you can look to run full synthetic (still recommend HM) with a Fram TG or XG on longer 10k OCI's...or not and just stick with the 5k OCI's

I have a 1997 4.6 2WD which I have owned since new. It has 270,000 miles on it with original powertrain. I have put conventional, synthetic, thick, thin, expensive and cheap oil in there. Good filters and not so good filters. OCI varies based on oil, driving habits and whether or not I towed. All has worked well.

BTW: Welcome to the boards and congrats on the truck.

Great engine. I'd personally run Maxlife 5w30 in it and be done, but they will run well a very long time on 5w20 too.

I agree. I have a 1998 with just over 110K miles on it, I bought just over a year ago. The previous owner had the oil changed at the local Firestone and/or Ford dealership. I'm using Mobil 5000 now, but I also agree with Sicko's comments and next oil change I may switch to Motorcraft since my local Wallymart now carries Motorcraft 5W-20 AND 5W-30 in the 5 quart bottles. For many months they only had the quart bottles and even then sometimes the shelves were very bare.

For the filter I'm using Napa filters. I used to only use Motorcraft on my Ford products but due to the Purolator tearing problems, I have (at least temporarily) discontinued doing so.

pennzoil yellow bottle 5w30 and a motorcraft filter and that 4.6 will run forever. Be careful when changing the spark plugs sometimes you can have problems with the threads..

Congratulations on the new to you truck. Those trucks are great and they run forever. The single most annoying thing about them where im from is the exhaust manifold studs all rust and break off and they tick. It's a pain to get to them to replace them as well. Other than that they are awesome IMO.

i have a 97 with 260k miles and it. It used 5w30 the first half of its life and 5w20 the the second half. it still runs great. It gets mostly whats on sale. MS5K, Trop Artic, etc. I've always used a Fl820s filter on it.

I had a 2003 Supercrew 4.6L. Ran it from 90k to 170k using Motorcraft semi-syn 5w30 + Fram TG filters with a 5-6k OCI. Never burned a drop of oil. I tried a K&N intake for a while but sold it and went back to the OEM intake and Fram paper filters, changed every 30k. The K&N intake sucked in hot engine compartment air, and was down on power in the summer heat. Also the filter allowed fine dirt into the intake tube.

Motor developed a slight tick at idle - an exhaust manifold gasket leak. I never bothered to fix it. I replaced the intake manifold due to a leak, that caused an unsteady idle. Other than that, no engine problems. Transmission was in good shape at 170k. Fluid was changed exactly once at 100k. No problem changing plugs on mine at 90k and 150k. No fluid leaks except a pinion seal on the rear axle ($20). Passed emissions with flying colors every time.

forgot to say motor runs great plenty of power no noise and cant see any oil loss valve cover has a little leak but just dirt sticking to oil
thanks

I have your EXACT same vehicle, only mine has around 62,600 miles. I bought it new, I had to order it the way I wanted it with a manual tranny. Up until 60,000 miles it ran only Motorcraft 5W-20 and the Motorcraft FL820S oil filter. Just changed over to Havoline 5W-20 Synthetic and a Fram Synthetic XG2 filter. The truck runs great, nice power, and idles smooth. Looking in the oil fill cap the valve train looks almost new. I ran oil change intervals from 5,000 miles to 7,500 miles. It's been a real good truck mechanically. But unfortunately NJ's salty winters are taking their toll on the body

. My manual tranny was real ornery to shift with the ATF fluid recommended. I ended up using Royal Purple SyncroMax manual transmission fluid and the shifting improved tremendously. I had a 1989 F-150 with the same manual tranny and it shifted great with the ATF

Hi txcoky - We recommend Pennzoil Platinum High Mileage with PurePlus Technology 5W-20 Full Synthetic Motor oil. It’s the first of its kind full synthetic high mileage motor oil made from natural gas and designed to deliver less oil burn off than other High Mileage oils. It helps reduce leaks and oil consumption as well as keeping pistons up to 40% cleaner than the toughest industry standards. Pennzoil Platinum High Mileage Motor Oil provides faster low temperature oil flow and protects in extreme heat and provides better protection from friction. Hope this helps! - The Pennzoil Team
