Didn't think it was all that much but I run 10w40 as it is cheaper with the frequent changes I do when towing. I'll change the oil 2 to 3 times when towing as we go across the country or close to it.
the Ford 4.6 is not know for being an oil burner. I would spend 5 dollars and replace the PCV valve on the passangers side valve cover first. This is a very well known issue. I bet that is your issue.
For what it's worth, I permanently moved to 5W-30 about 3 years ago for the higher HTHS.
My engines run even quieter and smoother than they did on the 5W-20 the vehicles were speced for.
