Hello, got a used 1997 Chevy Tahoe in the fall and it has 332,000kms on its engine. Nothing but Pennzoil Yellow bottle for entire time ( I knew previous owner) and doesn`t burn oil.

My question

I want to switch to PP synthetic for next winter, and I`ve learned from past experience that PP does clean out engine (right now my 95 Chevy 4x4 has 3000kms on first time with PP and it is really turning oil dark) and was considering using Coop DMO Synthetic 0W40 for the summer and then PP 5W30 for winter. Would the DMO Syn be too agressive of a clean or too fast? Or should I just use my Quaker State 10w30 for this summer and leave the leaning to PP in the winter?

Q.

I like Synthetic in winter. I had to start in -38`C this winter once, and -25`C to -30`C almost daily for about a month.

I am a huge fan of the synthetics and have been reading about this for a long time. So many convincing articles. I have had the same experience as you did of putting synthetic in an older truck and the oil got much darker than my conventional. The truck does burn a little more oil now that i have switched to syn but it isn't bad. about a quart every 2k miles. it is a 93 truck with 340,000 kms on it. I have had people tell me that a synthetic will not clean any better than a good dino. I dont believe this because i seen it with my own eyes. I also know that if your rings are worn, sometime the little bit of gunk that the dino leaves will help seal them a bit. I would maybe just stick to PYB 5w30 as it has seemed to work very good for you so far. Then again knowing me i may risk it and switch. If it burns a little more oil, ill just clean the plugs more often and keep adding it. Anyway good luck. Notes, out of the current synthetics the PP has the most Calcium of the bunch. This is used as a detergent. Go to the VOA section and look for the title 5w30 comparison.

Yep. I'd go w/ a synthetic, too!

Yep, in that tempature your skin can freeze in 30 seconds, when you get in your vehicle the seat doesn`t even compress (go down with your weight) and spit will freeze on contact with metal instantly.

How about penz HM in the summer and PP in the winter. If the PP cleans out too much in the winter use the HM to seal it all back up. Just a thought, I might be way off base on that idea but it sounds good from here.

I pulled off a few unassisted -38C and colder starts this winter...only way that happened in my mind was with good 0W oils. We had some -50C mornings this winter...even winter tires freeze some nasty flat spots at that temp!

I cannot imagine cold that is that cold. Here in NC if it gets to +20 and even thinks it may flurry, everyone goes into a panic and everything shuts down. i like the snow, but you can keep that -40 stuff up there. If it gets that cold, i would not even consider using anything but synthetics. Isnt motor oil quite a bit more expensive up there? PP is 23 dollars here USD.

about a month ago PP was 21.88 at walmart but it is usally 29.99 or even higher

The older "non-conforming" 4.4L jugs of PP are between $19.99 and $23.88, the newer jugs that conform to the Wal-Mart 5L standard range between $28.99 to $33.97, depending on location.

Why not ? What's wrong with switching to an even better oil ?

do a search on co-op DMO there was a good thread in december i think. From what i remember it was a very close oil to XD3 with a few differences in the add pack. seeing that you are in alberta look for the 25% off UFA branded products and find some polar plus 0W-30 if you wanted to go that way.

For the "why not stick with YB"...when it is -40 and colder i would have much more confidence in a 0W syn oil than a great 5W dino. I have no issue with YB but it gets really F'n cold out in Alberta during the winter. My car will be getting YB for its summer oil.
