Were are all the off aplication 0W20 and 5W20 UOA reports? We often see a lot of support and suggestions for people to put 0W20 or 5W20 in applications that do not and havenever called for a 20Wt. I am just woundering were all the UOA is of your off application 20Wt. usage is? We do have some off application 20Wt. UOA both pro and con but not as many as we have proponets of off application 20Wt. usage. I am just wanting to see some more of these so we can get an idea of how feasable it is. We need to see some GM(not a Honda engine in a Saturn either)Subaru,Mercedes,BMW,Toyota etc......

I know someone on this site told us they were testing 5W20 in their Buick 3.8 and would be posting the results. We have not seen these at all. They were pro 20Wt. in application not calling for it.

I recently went from Motorcraft 5w-20 to Mobil clean 7500 5w-30. Thus far my mpg has gone up 1-2 mpg and the 3.0 liter Ford DOHC engine seems to like it better. Previously I had tried GC 0w-30 with about the same results.

Hard for me to believe 5W-20 is best for this engine.

My 5w20 UOAs have all been posted and are there for the reading if you do a search.

Chrysler 3.5 HO spec'd for 10w30.

I'll be running RL 5w-20 in my 5.3L Suburban this summer, but the UOA won't be back until sometime in the winter. It has a 50/50 brew of Chevron Supreme 5w-20 and Chevron DELO 10w-30 that will be sampled in a few weeks.

My Mercury Villager has M1 5w-20 now, but won't be sampled for about 6 months.

It's going to be interesting to see the long term effects of Xw-20 but there is a problem basing it on the oil nerds lurking here. I think we tend to do a little too much in the maintenance and fussing with our vehicles than the general public. This is okay for our purposes but the public experience might be a bit different. Today a friend asked if I might look under the hood of his car and check things. He did not know how to open the hood and had no idea what his engine compartment looked like, but he was pretty sure the engine was in the front of the car. His experience of ownership and maintenance is going to be different than yours or mine. The reason he asked was that the dealer said that because his engine was a little low on oil that he needed an oil change and a service, even though he just had a service two weeks before. He was told that you can be too careful, that if the oil level is below the 'mark' it means you need an oil change. His car is a Honda that required 5w-20 oil and it appears that when the oil is changed it very quickly burns off a half quart of oil and then stays constant until the next change, this per his wife that checks the oil every fill up. I gave him the the phone number to a good independent Honda shop and told him to switch to a synthetic 5w-20 oil.

JohnBrowning,
You seem to be on a personal vendetta against the use 5W-20 oil PERIOD. I use it in my 2002 F-150 with the 4.6L V-8. My first UOA was good and I'm about to have another UOA done shortly. I ONLY recommend using it when the manufacture initially recommends it. You CANNOT deny that engines originally spec'd for 5W-20 didn't have good UOA's using it. I have a 1996 Contour which was originally spec'd for dino 5W-30 and back spec'd for 5W-20 but I'll continue to use Schaeffer's Supreme Blend 5w-30 in that vehicle because it's my "very poor man's BMW" and I drive the crap out of it sometimes because it's a 5 speed with the low profile wide tire/wheel factory option, with new grippy tires

.

5W-20 is NOT for every vehicle but where it's spec'd for NEW vehicles I don't see the fear in using it unless you are an "agressive" driver but then you'll probably destroy the engine anyway no matter what oil is used

JohnBrowning, in thinking over all the GM-3800 owner's here, I can't remember or find anyone committing to this test.

AFAIK, G-MAN II is the only pioneer with the Chrysler V-6 and real results.

Maybe if you pose it as a GM 3800 question, someone will respond.

I don't know of anyone, who has tried this in a standard GM engine.

I think John is looking for 5W-20 only. Using an HDEO with it thickens it.

=============================================

I've been reading John's remarks on 5W-20 and I remark on it whenever I read someone from the deep south using it. I'm sure John has no vendetta against 5-20s. They have a fantastic additive package in most manufacturers offering & I often mix the 5W-20s with 15W-40 HDEOs for my own personal 10W-30.

I want to know if any engine can last a lifetime in Texas or Florida using this thin stuff.... lifetime meaning 200-300K.. not necessarily 500K. I'm interested in the average 1.3K a month driver with a mix of highway & city driving.

Well, my sister lives in Midlothian Texas. She has a Honda Accord with 55,000 miles on it now. She has the oil changed every 5,000 miles at the dealer in Arlington Texas and she takes Pennzoil 5W20 with her when she goes there. So far so good. I will be there in August and will check to see how it is doing. For those of you that do not know where Midlothian is, it's Southwest of Dallas and Southeast of Ft. Worth. It gets plenty hot there. Most of her driving is short trips but once in a while she will blast up to Oklahoma to the casino.

Well, we know that that is a great combination and will absolutely work.

What happens when you put the lowest common denominator 5W-20 in a GM 3800 that specs. 10W-30 above 0F? I wonder, but I'm not going to try it.

I think too that someone had said he intended to run 5w20 in that engine -- but I believe he later posted that he had had second thoughts, and would not do it.

I live have a 2005 Civic SI and I'm a little concerned with using the 5w-20. We have our fair share of the heat in my part of the state. It's still in breakin stage (2000 Miles) so I have a litte longer to ponder the situation. I used Amsoil 2000 0-30 in my last vehicle and have about 10 quarts left. Maybe that wouldn't be too bad. I'm thinking of changing to something a little less expensive and better availibililty, probably QState Advanced or M1 Extended Performance.

Hey Johnny, I live in Midlothian Texas, too. Small world! Most people can't pronounce it, let alone know where it is.

Mid - low - thee - en. We have a Midlothian in Virginia, right outside of Richmond. Not sure where Midlothian Texas is though.

My point is that their are more people recomending 5W20 oils in off application use then have actualy tried Xw20 oils in off applications!!!! I never said that we do not have any just not enough to reflect the number of pro XW20 oil recomendations! So if you will re-read my origanal post I even acknoldge this!

SO those that have already posted their off application UOA results are not being addressed by my post! It is preety easy for anyone to see who has and who has not put their money were their mouth is!

In the end we need more data!!! So this post can also be taken as a challenge to all those that try to convince others to run XW20 in their off applications to do the same and post the results!!!!!!
