As many will remember, my parents have been vehicle shopping, somewhat casually, for a few years now to replace their aging Expedition. This was expedited recently as a result of their mechanic telling them that it's structurally unsound at this point (frame is rusting in half) and so they started looking more seriously at procuring a replacement.

Their criteria included 3-row seating, in the event that my sisters ended up borrowing it during the summer, since they travel together and have 4 kids between them.

I sent them some pictures of the two HEMI-equipped L's that my buddy had on the lot this past summer, they were the last he could get with the V8.

We closed up the cottage last weekend and early in the week my mom messaged me out of the blue asking if I could bring one of them over. I checked, and he still had them, so I grabbed the dark grey one and brought it by for her to take a look at.

Turns out, my parents had gone up to Ford on the Friday and test drove a new Expedition and found it absolutely huge; too large for them at this point, the same complaint they had about the Wagoneer. Dad was already a big fan of the Grand Cherokee (he loves mine) and liked the WL when he test drove one, which I covered in a previous thread.

The appeal of these two specifically was the traditional port-injected V8 backed by the ZF 8HP with no auto start stop and of course the premium appointments, being in the Summit Reserve trim.

Mom got in, loved it, and the heated/cooled massaging seats sealed the deal for her, so they bought it.

Dealer installed options were the floor mats and the Mopar running boards.

Will do an update once they've had it for a few months, but dad absolutely loves it at this point.

The interior is so well done. McIntosh stereo and iirc, 21" wheels.
Such a nice ride, the Hemi is the right engine for this.
Hope they enjoy it.

Yes, the McIntosh stereo is fantastic, and yes, the 21's are stock on this trim IIRC. The interior is stunning. It's nicer than my SRT interior TBH, the quilted leather really makes it. The longer wheelbase also means it's not "twitchy" like my SRT tends to be, it's very relaxing to drive. Peer-wise, it's very similar to the X5.

Agreed on the HEMI. Dad is 75 and likes a big old port-injected V8, which was part of the reason we also considered the Wagoneer. The HEMI motivates this SUV effortlessly, with no NVH and a pleasant, but very muted engine note, which fits the theme. Quite the contrast to the 2.0L I4 in the PHEV models which is thrashy, unrefined and loud.

One of the big things for my parents are the headlights, which, on the Expedition were like the Elton John song: candle in the wind. They were so bad that when I drove it at night I felt like we were in a carriage with a couple of lanterns hanging. Dad avoided driving it at night for that reason. The LED headlights on this are very bright, which means safer navigation home from the cottage.

Looks like super high quality interior from what can be seen. That is a big deal for me with any vehicle. I will admit lots of automakers have been getting away from the pathetic cheap o interiors they were pushing for a time. Looks like an awesome machine overall. They should be pleased with it. (y)

Sharp! They are an ideal size too …
But 21” wheels? - gotta wonder the impact of so many tire/wheel combo’s on cost - tires are getting to be an investment 😷

Beautiful, congratulations to your parents. Anyone who looks at that vehicle, and its interior, and thinks that Jeep (Stellantis) is not making some of the nicest vehicles around right now needs to have his or her head checked. I continue to enjoy our Ram four years later, and as I mentioned we had a fabulous experience for two weeks with a Grand Wagoneer L with the new HO turbo six. All fantastic vehicles.

I hope they use it in good health. Good luck!

Very nice looking vehicle. I seriously hope it doesn't suffer from many of the reliability and poor service things that Stellantis has been having. At least you know many of things t be able to help.

Does Canada do the extended Mopar warranties? We got my FIL the 8/85 Mopar for his Renegade through online dealer for a much cheaper price than from local dealer. He was very glad I talked him into that when they covered the motor replacement at 83k.

He is just tired of constant trips for repairs even though it was being covered.

I looked at an L as a replacement vehicle but the 3rd row was too small for the people in my family (no small kids).

On their Expedition did they do the Krown or Fluid Film? Maybe something to consider on the new one. No rubberized versions!

Yes, if dad chooses to add an extended warranty he can do so at any time during the factory warranty period with no penalty, though I'm hoping that this version of the L, with the extremely conventional powertrain, won't require much, if any, use of the warranty.

Yes, they used Krown and Rust Check (switched between the two) later in its life, but it was already "compromised" by that point, because mom had been conned into the "electronic rust protection" gimmick when she bought it. It became a bit of a gag for dad, mom would be like "odd, why is the trailer hitch rusting?" and dad would quickly pop the hood and point at the device and be like "you are hallucinating, look at this unit, the light is on, no rust here!" and eventually the freakin' unit itself started rusting, which was a right riot.

Dad is already planning on getting it in and sprayed at Rust Check.

He's also ordering a set of OE replicas with Michelin X-Ice Snow SUV tires on them, as I was able to convince him to buy snows. He has kept his rust-free 2003 Town Car, as he has no reason to get rid of it and both it and the GC fit well in the garage together (the Expedition was a bit of a squeeze).

Rest assured they’ll send an EW offer twice a week 😉
