2024 Civic w/NA 2.0 - Honda recommends 0w-20 - Suggestions and thoughts?

Brand new video, with actual first short OCI UOA.
Oh boy.

To OP,

Run a quality oil and filter (My choice on a Honda would be Mobil 1 EP / Factory or Endurance) follow the MM and reset it when it goes off.

If you do an early change (which isn't necessary) then do not reset the MM for that change.

No heroic over maintenance is necessary to get 200,000 out of a Honda engine.

Honda actually does use a special break-in oil that's not available outside the factory.

non-turbo Hondas aren't picky on oil. 0w20 is perfectly fine, but sometimes it's out-of-stock or something, or if you can get a good deal on something else, then there is nothing wrong with that :)

I thought the consensus was Hondas came from the factory with standard Honda oil but assembly lubes, like molybdenum, wash into the sump and make it look exotic.

This is what the moderator on the ridgline forum has concluded.

Factory fill in most cases is idemitsu and there is no special instructions ro break in do not remove until the MM says so as to keep the assembly moly in.

I'd use a top tier approved oil while under warranty. Keep the rings as clean as possible.

Thanks for the reply. So I double checked the O.M. and I see no mention of alternative grades being "okay" per Honda, so it looks like Im sticking with that 0w-20 while under the 3/36k warranty. I need to see if I can find out why Honda says to sit on the FF until the M.M. says so. Interested in that for sure, as I would think dumping it ~2500mi or so would be beneficial.
Your powertrain which covers the engine is actually 5 years or 60000 miles so you might want to consider adding more 0W20 to your stash to cover those additional years and miles.

Depends on the short trips. My '19 Pilot with short trips didn't have great UOA with the 0W-20 granted it's a totally different NA motor. Next round for me will be 5W-30 Euro PP. I'll do a UOA anyway as I'm driving it on a lot longer drives daily working on some tranny concerns.

Something to consider- Factory HondaCare from Hyannis Honda or I think Saccucci Hondafrom the other forums. I bought mine from Hyannis. It was less than 1/2 the price local dealers wanted. I got the 8yr/120k. It has already been used and probably almost paid for as they diagnosed bad battery sensor. Coworker got torque converter covered at just over 100k which would have been about $8k. With all the electronics and sensors it might come in handy. Hopefully (except for the money) it's a waste of your $$ and you never have any issues.

Oh and make a book/folder/scan upload all your receipts for it even if you change your own oil. Picture with mileage and change in progress. Being ahead makes it easy if ever needed.

Honda recommends viscosity 0w-20, but does not require unlike other fluids.
These engines could be big fuel diluters, and 5w-30 might be more appropriate to offset the effects of lowered viscosity. I would do UOA and go from there

So from what Ive gathered on FB, forums etc is that the 1.5 is the diluter. I havent read that the 2.0 has the same issues...

This is what I was wondering... thanks! I did the same on my Fords from Twin Rivers Ford. Thanks for giving me the info on the warranties! I'll extend it when its closer to the end of the 3/36k

But they know its a problem in the name of quality why haven't they fixed it? It seems Toyota may be working on it with a dual injection engine.

Who knows why they dont fix it, maybe they cant without major redesign.

All I know that my viscosity drops by 2 or more cSt.

According to the mods on CRV forums there is no fuel dilution problem with any Honda DI/TGDI engine. Post this blasphemy there and the thread would be locked immediately.

UOA viscosity data is a real data, not an opinion.

I have 2.0T engine in my acura, its a diluter also, perhaps little less issue. My UOA had viscosity drops from 8.8 to 6.4 on 0w-20 oil

UOA viscosity data is a real data, not an opinion.
Hmm.. So is that dilution enough to take it out of grade? Do you short trip? I thought fuel getting into the oil will be evaporated out with highway driving and not short tripping it?

I do Mostly highway driving. You can review other people posting in UOA section for 2.0T with similar findings. For some people it was worse than mine. No, it did not take it out of minimum allowed viscosity for 0w20 (which is 5.6) The fuel dilution was 5%.
