No they are not the same, but very similar, and he said "as an alternative". The GLI might feel a little less special, but with small mods like rear sway bar etc. - GLI can just be as fun, but much more reliable, more features and more interior space. You still get a huge aftermarket support because it's basically the same drivetrain.
MK8 has tons of issues right now, that might be the reason why previous owner got rid of it. FB groups are full of wiring harness, steering wheel-column and infotainment problems which happens again even after the warranty replacement.
Even if you don't have any issues, the infotainment system just sucks, huge step backwards compared to GLIs or older gen GTI infotainment.
This is coming from a GLI owner who drove both mk8 GTI & R and also ordered a mk8 Golf R, I'm just hoping they fix the problems and update the infotainment before my car arrives, or I'll just back off just because we don't have the lemon law here and don't want to deal with wiring harness issues.
